The Arkansas Diamonds Report
By: J. Hurley
The Arkansas Diamonds move into their bye week with a 35 – 21 win over the Corpus Christi Hammerheads. The Diamonds promptly hit the end zone with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Coco Blalock for a quick 6. A Hafford pick on defense put the ball right back into the hands of the Diamonds offense but it ended in a missed field goal. The Hammerheads worked the Diamonds defense and drove them back to their own 2 yard line. But like so many other times this season penalties stacked up against the Hammerheads and they were not able to get anything going on offense. With a short field Copeland quickly connected with Lenhart for 6 more and after a second missed extra point the score was 12 – 0. The Diamonds defense stood firm against the Hammerhead offense and forced a failed field goal attempt.
The Arkansas offense drove deep into Corpus Christi territory to start the 2nd quarter only to come up empty after their drive stalled. During the next Hammerheads possession the Arkansas defense terrorized Corpus Christi. The Diamonds returned a fumbled snap to put another touchdown on the board and after another missed extra point the score was 18 to nothing Arkansas. The Hammerheads struggled once again on offense and penalties kept them from getting any traction on their drive. But a penalty on the Diamonds defense kept their drive alive and put Corpus Christi in a position to make it an 18 – 7 game. With seconds left in the first half of the game the Diamonds responded when Copeland connected with Lenhart for a touchdown and with a successful extra point the Diamonds hit the locker room leading at half time 25 – 7.
Corpus Christi came out strong in the second half with a touchdown drive that was capped off with a 2 point conversion making the score 25 - 15. From that point both offenses seemed to struggle. The Hammerhead defense put the pressure on Copeland and forced back to back fumbles for the Diamonds offense, the second of which was recovered by Corpus Christi. While the Arkansas defense kept pressuring the Hammerhead offense but they were still able to reach the end zone, cutting the Diamonds lead to 4 points. The Arkansas offense sputtered but made a field goal to end the 3rd quarter leading by a touchdown 28 – 21.
The Arkansas defense was unrelenting and kept Corpus Christi off the board in 4th quarter. After a defense stand Copeland connected with Savoy for a touchdown and made it a two possession game. But the Diamonds defense really sealed the deal in the end of the 4th quarter by forcing and then recovering another fumble from the Hammerheads with only about minute left. This victory holds the Diamonds lead in the Lonestar East making them 4 and 1 for the season.
The Arkansas will travel to San Angelo for week 7 to face the Stampede Express. San Angelo improves their record to 3 – 1 with a win over the Ruff Riders and will look to continue their winning streak to four as they face West Texas Ruff Necks next Saturday at home. The Diamonds will have a bye week and return to turf April 17th when they hit the road to face a tough Stampede Express team who wants their spot on top of the Lonestar East!
