Well, as I left the Season Ticket Holder Party tonight Chris asked me what I learned that I was going to go post on the forums when I got back home. I didn't want to disappoint him by not posting something ... (hi Chris, I know you read these ) They mentioned a rule change tonight that I thought was interesting. Normally the Linebackers need to line up 5 yards back from the line of scrimmage, but there will be an exception to that this year. On 4th down if there are 2 or less yards to go, the Linebackers can line up only 2 yards off the ball, to give the defense a better chance at stopping them on these plays. By the way, the party was good. Nice place, good food, and got to talk to some players and coaches from the Spartans, and some other fans. It is nice to have something just for the Season Ticket Holders to help show that they are special to the team.

That's a good rule change.

it's really only a modification. the LB can line up ON the goal line in those situations.. I too like the change.

... the LB can line up ON the goal line in those situations... Even better. If this works well, maybe they will consider doing this for 1-3rd down too, not just 4th.

That would take away some of the running game that I love in indoor football that you don't see in arena ball.

Indeed. I DO NOT want to see the run game get gutted like arena ball. BORING! This rule will be good, don't get me wrong. I just do not want to see a slow steady migration to pass or nothing football.

But, I think if they stick this only when it is 2 yds or less to go, then you are not really taking away the running game, you are just keeping the offense from having an unfair advantage in the short yardage situations.

If LBs can line up on the LOS then you would just need to have a FB to block. Something you do see some teams do on the goal line.

That's my take as well. I definitely don't want it to turn into arena ball though, I'd give up following the sport. I like the run game, a valid run game, it's a huge part of football for me. Pass, pass, pass puts me to sleep.

Yeah, I missed the part about two yards or less to go.
