Spartans: Interim coach credits staff for keeping him 'steady' in win
By JEFF BROWN / lacrossetribune.com April 4, 2011
It was the first game in the two-year history of the La Crosse Spartans that a guy named Gilbert Brown wasn't on the sideline.
Brown, the former Green Bay Packer who took an indefinite leave of absence from coaching the IFL team, certainly wasn't out of touch with the team.
It's a good bet his brother, Kyle Moore-Brown, called him shortly after the team's 50-44 win over Nebraska, its third straight win.
Moore-Brown credited his assistant coaches - offensive coordinator Jose Jefferson and defensive coordinator Mitch Madland - for keeping him calm.
"Those two coaches, they did a tremendous job," Moore-Brown said. "That is why it's called a team. I give my hats off to the coaching staff. They kept me steady."
Moore-Brown could be heard yelling from the sideline a number of times from the game, which made the Spartans' players feel right at home.
"It felt really the same," said Spartans' quarterback Jamil Abdullah, who had three interceptions against Nebraska.
"Gilbert is more vocal at halftime. His speeches, well, Gilbert can be over the top. Gilbert's speeches can be intimidating and the players know it."
ABBOTT INJURED: On the first play of the game - just 26 seconds into the contest - disaster struck the La Crosse Spartans.
Courtney Abbott, the Spartans' 6-foot-9, 320-pound offensive lineman from Florida State, went to the turf in obvious pain. He stayed there for several minutes until he was helped off the field.
Abbott was taken to a hospital for further examination. He has a severely sprained foot and his status is uncertain at this point, Moore-Brown said.
"He is one of our better pass protectors," Moore-Brown said. "Every single defensive lineman we have can play offensive line. Because of that right there, because you never know. "I don't want to be like, ‘Oh my God, what are we going to do?'"
TOUGH YARDS: LaRon Council didn't reach the end zone Sunday against the Nebraska Danger, but he did carry a big share of the Spartans' offensive load.
Council rushed 17 times for 66 yards, including a 17-yard burst. It was Council, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound running back from Northwest Missouri State, who helped keep the Nebraska defense off balance.
"He is a heck of a running back. This is his first year (indoor football) and he is still getting used to the angles," Moore-Brown said. "This is not the outdoor game where you can kind of stretch everything.
"He will be a big part of our offense. We will need him. He is a tremendous threat on the ground and we hope he will continue getting better."
THROW AND PRAY: When Spartans' quarterback Buddy Rivera goes deep, it's a good bet his target is going to be 5-foot-8, 180-pound Bryan Pray.
Pray isn't big, but he's lightning-fast. Pray caught five passes for 85 yards against Nebraska, including TD catches of 36 and 27 yards.
"Pray is awesome," Rivera said. "We played together two years ago in Iowa and are on the same page a lot. He is a great deep threat.
"His future should be bright when he moves on. Right now we are happy to have him here."
WILLIAMS IMPRESSIVE: Tommy Williams, a 5-10, 185-pound defensive back from Temple, came up big against Nebraska.
Williams had seven unassisted tackles and one assisted against the Danger. He also forced one of two Nebraska fumbles as La Crosse came away with five turnovers against Danger.
