IFL Playoffs (Quarterfinals) Recap
June 30, 2011
Richmond, VA: Friday, June 24th, the Indoor Football League started the Quarterfinals of the 2011 post-season. The top 8 teams of the IFL battled to earn a coveted spot in the Semi-Finals.
The Indoor Football League started quarterfinals of the playoffs with the Intense Conference Friday evening. The game was the second time the Fairbanks Grizzlies and the Allen Wranglers met up for the 2011 season. During the first match-up the Grizzlies were victorious. Early in the game the Wranglers looked to even the record with a win by scoring an early touchdown in the first quarter. The Wranglers defense was able to hold the Grizzlies to a touchdown and a failed extra point attempt. However, in the second quarter, the Grizzlies were able to get back into the game, and cut the Wranglers' lead to just 1 point going into halftime. Coming out of halftime, the Wranglers knew that they must fight harder to ensure that their second match-up with the Grizzlies would not end up like the first. The Wranglers were able to outscore the Grizzlies 14-6 in the third quarter; however, in the fourth quarter both teams turned it into overdrive looking to reach the semi-finals. Both teams put up a very strong effort; the game came down to the team that had the fewest errors in the end, which the Grizzlies fell prey to. The Allen Wranglers were able to grab 2 interceptions, and recover a Grizzlies fumble, which in the end provided them the edge needed to become the first victors of Round 2, 72-54.
The second game for the quarterfinals was between conference rivals, the Omaha Beef and the Sioux Falls Storm. The Omaha Beef was the first and only team to get a win against the Sioux Falls Storm in their final game of the 2011 regular season and hoped to have a repeat; however, the Storm had other plans in mind. In the first quarter, it appeared this was going to be a heated battle with the final score of the first quarter tied at 10. However, the Storm was able to quickly pull away in the second quarter by scoring 21 points and holding the Beef to only 9 points. Coming out of halftime, both teams had difficulty finding the end zone with the Storm scoring once for a touchdown, and the Beef remaining scoreless. In the final quarter of the game, the Beef found the momentum on their side as they found the end zone 3 times; however, the valiant efforts of the Omaha Beef were not enough to overcome the damage of the previous 2 quarters. The Sioux Falls Storm rallied together to conquer the Omaha Beef for a spot in the Semi-Finals, 52-39.
The final game for Saturday evening was between the Reading Express and the number 2 seed Green Bay Blizzard. These two teams are no strangers to each other, meeting up twice in the regular season, which turned out to be a sweep for the Blizzard; however, the Express hoped to close out where it really counted. In the first quarter, both teams were evenly matched with only a 1 point difference in favor of the Blizzard. By the time halftime came around, the Blizzard was only ahead by 8 points and the Express had an opportunity to still win the game especially since momentum was on their side with a pick-6 from Armar Watson. The third quarter was not promising for the Express because the two teams tied 14-14; however, in the fourth quarter, the Blizzard was able to pull away from the Express only allowing 1 touchdown in the beginning of the quarter. The final 16 unanswered points all came from the Green Bay Blizzard, which allowed them to secure their lead and victory over the Reading Express, 68-51.
