Thom Hager, owner of the Louisiana Swashbucklers, created the Southern Indoor Football League on Tuesday, 28 October 2008.
The Swashbucklers' owner left the Indoor Football League (established months earlier) to create this new league due to concerns about the IFL's yearly budget, expected to be between $400,000 to $500,000 according to Hager, and the fact that they've been operating in the red the last few years. Hager plans to have 7-8 teams in the SIFL in 2009, with yearly budgets around $300,000.
Louisiana's departure from the IFL leaves that league with 23 teams for 2009, with Kent scheduled to start in 2010.

I wish them luck. Hopefully they can find some good markets (AND GOOD OWNERS) in the south and create a successful league.

It's getting late for true expansion teams to start up, so if they're going to add teams like that they better get on it now. I think they're targeting existing teams to join them, most likely the former Intense teams and a few others. By the end of next month it should all be clear I think.

I don't think they would have made the move without already basically having the teams in place. Probably just not announcing yet.

What? The IFL teams couldn't handle losing to Sioux Falls in the first ever championship so they are going to take their football and go home?
Thats worse than anything Sioux City would do.

I don't think they would have made the move without already basically having the teams in place. Probably just not announcing yet. Yes and no. If it was as squared away as all that they would've left together. By leaving first, they show they're serious and that they're trying to get the undecideds to make up their mind. I'm fairly sure some will follow, but probably not as many as they might have hoped for. We'll know soon though.

with any merger there will be some fallout. a close example would be the CHL & WPHL merger in Hockey-some teams folded and the league is till there (even expanded)
some teams are in the southern league and doing OK, and the CHL is OK as well.
I think the IFL will be fine and I hope lake charles knows what they are doing.
