Stallions Outlast Swashbucklers

The Louisiana Swashbucklers again showed they can play with the Houston Stallions. Still can’t beat them, though.
The Stallions hung on for a 40-38 win in the Southern Indoor Football League regular-season finale.
The win gave the Stallions a 12-0 record. The Swashbucklers (9-4) will be the second seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They will host third-seeded Corpus Christi Saturday in the Civic Center.
The Stallions defense intercepted Swashbucklers quarterback Ben McLaughlin on the first two possessions of the game, stuffed them with a goal-line stand in the second quarter and stopped a potentially game-tying 2-point conversion attempt with 2 minutes left to preserve the win.
“On their goal-line stand, we were moving the ball well and had momentum and our holder (Sammy Knight) was in the locker room being treated, so I decided to go for it,” explained Swashbucklers coach Darnell Lee. “They made the two interceptions and the big play at the end. Their defense is good and they kept coming at us.”
The Stallions took the lead for good with 7 seconds left in the third quarter when Robert Kent scored on a 2-yard run to make the score 33-29. Blake Bercegeay’s third field goal for the Swashbucklers cut the lead to one, but Houston pushed it back to 40-32 on a 1-yard scoring run by Carlos Aslup.
The Swashbucklers scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run by McLaughlin with 2:19 left to cut the score to 40-38, but the 2-point conversion failed with Jordan Rideaux was tackled at the 1 on a reverse.
The Stallions recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran the clock out.
The Swashbucklers enter the playoffs on a two-game losing streak. They lost at Corpus Christi on June 5. Lee said he remains confident.
“This was the top team in the league, I can’t be too disappointed,” he said.
“Our guys fought hard the whole time. They executed well. We did a good job defensively holding Houston to 40 points. But they took the short game away from us with their linebackers and kept our quarterback on the move.
“This was a playoff-type game and our guys fought hard and kept their heads up the whole time. We can’t look back, only forward. We have Corpus Christi coming in and we are going to prepare hard for them just like we did for Houston.”
Houston took a 14-0 first-quarter lead on a touchdown pass from Kent to Roland Hayes and a touchdown run by Aslup.
The Swashbucklers stormed back in the second quarter to cut the lead to 20-19 at halftime, scoring the final 12 points on a safety, a field goal and touchdown pass from McLaughlin to Marcus Wilridge.
