They've been pursuing him for awhile and now they've landed him. If he still has an arm he could be a big difference for them.

Former Ram Holland inks deal with Ice

Former CSU quarterback Justin Holland will be playing football again in Northern Colorado. Holland said Wednesday he has signed with the Colorado Ice for its upcoming Indoor Football League season. "I was just really missing the game and missing competing," Holland said. "The last few years I've been trying to play but haven't caught on anywhere." Holland, 25, played for Colorado State University during 2002-05 and left ranked first in team history in completion percentage (62.1), fifth in career touchdowns (36) and sixth in career yardage (5,668). He ranks first on the Rams' single-season lists for TD passes (23) and completion percentage (63.7) and second in yards (3,185). "His name alone is going to lend a lot of credibility to the Ice and the league in general," Ice coach/general manager Collis Sanders said. Holland spent time in 2006 in the Miami Dolphins' training camp and with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Last year, he was in the Colorado Crush's training camp before being released by the Arena Football League team. "It was one of those situations where they said 'We like you, but we don't have room for you,' " Holland said. Ice owner John Cunningham said Holland was a perfect fit for his team. "He's a local Colorado kid who played at CSU, which is what we're trying to do," Cunningham said. The Ice, which played two seasons in the United Indoor Football league, will begin its initial IFL season with an exhibition game March 13 against the Northern Colorado Wolfpack. The Ice's first regular-season game is March 28 against the visiting Billings Outlaws. All Ice home games will be played at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland. Holland will join other former CSU players on the Ice, including offensive linemen Dane Stratton and Brandon Alconcel, defensive back Travis Garcia and wide receiver George Hill. Cunningham said more players will be added. "We've got more big-name announcements to come, but we wanted to do this one on its own," Cunningham said.

Holland signs deal for ’09 season
Mike Brohard / Loveland Reporter-Herald
Ever since the team’s inception, Colorado Ice coach Collins Sanders has hoped to entice Justin Holland to play quarterback for the team. Wednesday, Sanders’ wish finally came true. Holland, the most accurate career passer in Colorado State history (62.1 percent), signed a deal with the Indoor Football League team for the upcoming season. “He’s a great athlete, he has a great arm and I believe he’s a leader,” Sanders said. “That will be a plus for us.” Holland’s just looking forward to playing again, even if the field is much smaller. With former teammates on the Ice roster, Holland has been a regular fan at games. “They’ve been recruiting me for awhile,” Holland said. “I’ve kept my arm in shape. I don’t think (the drive to play) ever goes away, and I’m really looking forward to it.” Holland, a Bear Creek High School product who is still the state’s all-time prep passing leader, showed off his arm for the Rams for three seasons, throwing for 5,668 yards in his career, including a game-best 419. His 23 touchdown passes in his senior year of 2005 stand as a school record, when he threw for 3,185 yards. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder had tryouts after graduation with the Miami Dolphins, as well as in the Canadian Football League and with the Colo-rado Crush. This past fall, he helped tutor Colorado State’s young quarterbacks, and Ice owner John Cunningham thinks that helped play into Holland’s decision to sign this time around. “It’s a win-win for both of us,” Cunningham said. “He gets to play, and he gets to remain around the Northern Colorado area. I’m really excited.” Holland has stayed involved with the sport, running passing camps down in the Denver area, something he hopes to carry up north, as well. As for the indoor game, Holland thinks it will require a bit of study, but expects his style to translate well. “It’s going to be new for me, and I will have to adjust,” Holland said. “Dropping back and getting rid of the ball with a quick release is something I’ve always been able to do. There are a few more touch passes, but I think it’s just a matter of getting the timing down with the receivers.” In Colorado’s first two years of existence, the team has never had a set quarterback for one season, with Ryan Clement and Garrett Mehl splitting time last year. Mehl finished out the season last year for the team, and is still on the roster. “They’re going to compete,” Sanders said. “We’re really fortunate to have the type of talent that we do have.”
