LAS VEGAS, NV., March 12, 2012/LFL360.com – Lingerie Football League, LLC., the fastest growing sports league in the United States, today officially released the team name of LFL Canada’s Saskatoon franchise. After conducting an online fan vote which garnered over 7,500 votes, the Saskatoon Sirens officially became the fourth named franchise of LFL Canada, whose inaugural season is set to kickoff on August 25, 2012.
The Sirens will join the country’s flagship franchise, the Toronto Triumph, who competed in the U.S. league in 2011, as well as the recently-named BC Angels and Regina Rage franchises to form the first year league.
The Saskatoon franchise will play its home games at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, SK. Team colors and an official logo are expected to be released this week.
"Minor league pro football is a weird universe filled with bounced checks, unpaid bills, empty promises, out-right lies, empty arenas, endless women, endless booze, occasionally drugs, endless trips on rented buses to towns on the outskirts of the Big Time and, for one night a week, a football game." -- Bill Shea
The Lingerie Football League (LFL) Canada announced Tuesday morning the team will be called the Saskatoon Sirens.
“Sirens were considered dangerous creatures, portrayed as seductresses who lured nearby sailors to their untimely deaths with their enchanting music and voices,” the league said in an press release.
The team will kick off their four-game regular season in September at Credit Union Centre.
LimeDrop Marketing designed the Saskatoon Sirens logo, which has a mermaid tail coming out of a stylized team name.
The Regina Rage were named last week after more than 7,000 entries were submitted.
Four of the league’s six teams have already been introduced, including the B.C. Angels, Toronto Triumph, and the Regina Rage.
Two more teams in the east have yet to be announced.
The LFL has been criticized as a gimmick that demeans female athletes. Some Credit Union members say the organziation should consider severing their multi-million-dollar sponsorship ties with the arena.
City council this week was inundated with letters critical of the league.
“It is beyond reproach that in the year 2012, the Lingerie Football League exists and is being supported,” said Nancy Gyurcsik, an associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan, in a letter to council slamming the league.
“Women, girls, and their supporters have a long history of fighting for their rights to be able to participate in and have an equal playing field with men and boys in all of athleticism,” Gyurscsik said, noting athletics have been shown to promote self-esteem, self-confidence, perseverance, character, integrity, physical health, mental health, and a multitude of other benefits.
“To send the message to young girls and women that to participate in sport, they must be supremely attractive and dress in lingerie is simply wrong. To not see this as a message of demeaning and devaluing is abhorrent.”
Mitchell Mortaza, the league’s founder, defends the LFL as and says it hasn’t been given a fair portrayal in Saskatchewan.
