Hey Storm Fans!
The Sioux Falls Storm of Indoor Football League (IFL) has re-signed yet another veteran for the 2009 season. Defensive end Leif Murphy is entering his seventh season of professional football and has spent time in the Canadian Football League (CFL) the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) as well as the Arena Football League (AFL).
Murphy was an All-UIF selection in both 2005 and 2006 as a member of the Beef defensive front. In 2005, Murphy tallied 48.5 tackles and finished third in the league with 10 sacks. Murphy continued to contribute in 2006 as he accounted for 43.5 tackles and led the team again in sacks with 9.5. In his 2007 season with the Storm, Murphy played 14 games, had 2 touchdowns, 44 solo tackles and 25 assisted. Leif also had a game high against the Colorado Ice with 3.5 tackles in a single game. In 2008 Leif went on to play in the AFL with the Grand Rapids Rampage. In his career with the Rampage, Murphy led the Rampage with three forced fumbles and ranked second with three sacks during the regular season. Murphy also tied the league for most pass breakups by a linemen with three (3).
Murphy also had a storied college career while playing at North Dakota State University (NDSU). Murphy started all 11 games as a freshman in 1999. He compiled 36 tackles and 4 sacks for the Bison. Murphy added 40 tackles and 4 more sacks as a sophomore before breaking onto the national scene as a junior in 2001. Murphy was named first-team All-American for his efforts in the 2001 campaign as he had 34 tackles and 11 sacks. Murphy’s senior season was marred by injury as he suffered a broken thumb and pulled his hamstring in the final half of the season.
Storm President, Colin Steen says, “Leif Murphy is a tremendous addition to the Storm’s defensive unit. He will definitely have a huge impact on helping us defend our crown as the number 1 team in the IFL.”
