Wichita Wild Vs. New Mexico Stars March 31st Game Preview
March 28, 2012
WICHITA, KS. - The Wichita Wild of the Indoor Football League (IFL) will play host to the New Mexico Stars this Saturday, March 31st. This will be the first matchup between the two teams this season. The Wild come into the week 6 matchup at 0-4, the Stars 1-1. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:05pm (CST) at Hartman Arena.
New Mexico hasn't played in two weeks and is sure to be rested, but the biggest question will be whether the rust has set in. In two games, the Stars have allowed 42 points per game while scoring 37. Quarterback Arkelon Hall has completed 58% of his passes, throwing 35-60 for 287 yards, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Wichita is coming off an extremely physical battle against the Allen Wranglers last weekend in a game that ultimately saw Wichita lose 61-48. The game was interrupted by several scuffles. Emotions ran high following the conclusion of the game, ultimately leading to a one game suspension of Wild Defensive End Kwame Jordan, handed down by the IFL earlier this week.
The game was full of back and forth action as the lead changed several times throughout the course of the game. Starting quarterback Phil Staback was knocked from the game during the second quarter with an MCL sprain, keeping him out indefinitely for 3-4 weeks. Prior to his injury, Staback was 7-8 for 4 touchdowns. Marcus Jackson stepped in and performed admirably completing 10-17 passes for 1 touchdown, but unfortunately a last minute interception ended up costing the Wild a shot at the win. Rookie Wide Receiver Doug Pierce had a standout game, hauling in 143 yards and 5 touchdowns.
With the loss of both Staback and Jordan, the Wild will look to lean heavily on supporting players to step into new positions if they wish to walk away with a win this Saturday night.
Key Matchup: Wild Offense vs. Stars Offense Currently, the Wild stand 13th in the IFL in points per game with 39.7, while the Stars stand 15th at 37 points per game. New starting Wild Quarterback Marques Jackson must jump start the Offense and kick his throwing prowess in high gear as the Stars are 9th in the league in total defense, allowing only 42 points a game.

WICHITA, KS. – The Wichita Wild of the Indoor Football League (IFL) won a thriller against the New Mexico Stars tonight in a hard fought defensive battle. Wichita walked away with the team’s first win on the season; final score Wichita 31, New Mexico 24.
A Defensive battle throughout, the game started off slowly with both teams struggling to find the end zone. Defensive stand after defensive stand saw both teams fail to score in the first quarter. Much of the same continued throughout the second quarter in a game that was quickly becoming dominated by each team’s Kicker. The highlight of the first half came via a Wild safety with 14 seconds left in the second. Going into halftime, the Wild led the Stars 11-3.
The third quarter was identical to the first, with both teams failing to put points on the board. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the game began to open up. Wild Quarterback Marcus Jackson scored early in the fourth off a 5 yard run, followed by another Wichita score off a 31 yard run by Tywon Hubbard, putting Wichita up 24-3. However the Stars responded quickly with a touchdown from Quarterback Arkelon Hall to New Mexico Receiver Roland Bruno putting New Mexico back in the game; 24-9.
The defensive battle continued until with 4:09 left to play in the game, Wild Quarterback Marques Jackson connected with Wide Receiver Kyle Riffle for a touchdown, giving Wichita a bit more breathing room. But New Mexico wasn’t finished, and gave Wichita a big scare from back-to-back scoring drives with 1:24 and 49 second left to play, putting the Stars down by only one position. However, New Mexico’s last quarter push ended up being too little too late. Wichita recovered the onside kick with 48 seconds left and finished off the game.
The Wild walked away with the win, the first on their season, final score of 31-24.
