This issue was solved many many years ago when the MLB tried to get fans to give back baseballs that went into the crowd. Is this for real? It's considered abandonment, or is this just bs conjecture? Some proof would be nice, a link or news article or something. Basketballs go into the stands courtside all the time and no one fights to keep them. Sorry, but this doesn't seem accurate to me. I know the Beef always announce that kicked balls must be returned to the field before the game, but fumbled or passed balls can be kept. That said, BNDC never should've been tackled for running away with that ball that time (an uppercut would've been better ... kidding ).

In Sioux City, during the course of play any ball (be it kicked, thrown, fumbled, whatever) goes home with the fan if it goes in the stands. Period. We run a replay showing the fan catching the ball with the sponsor banner on the big screen. We are also contractually obligated to say "That's another ball going home courtesy of.. blah blah blah... the official ball sponsor of the SC Bandits". The sponsor helps to pay for the ball... we plug their business when the ball goes home. How they do it on other teams/arenas is up to them.
As to why we stopped attempting PAT's last night? No clue, but I'm pretty sure it didn't have to do with a lack of available footballs or a call being made by the owner telling them to stop. Say what you want about Bob, but how the game is called is up to the coaches. If a ref said that, it's conjecture or total speculation on his part. Besides... we're two games in and we really haven't had that many go into the stands so far this year (maybe 10 total?).

All I know, was there was a court case back in the early days of baseball where a fan won the right to keep a ball that went into the stands. Before that case balls were returned to the team. This is all from memory, so there may be some details that are incorrect, but I don't care enough to look it up.

I was looking for a link to the major MLB lawsuit and could not find one.
I also threw a hypothetical at a lawyer one time (off the record) and he said if I kept it they could throw me out, but they could not say I stole the ball, nor would they be able to have me arrested for theft.

I dont normally post on this board but I feel that I must clear somethings up. While I do in fact hate kickers, always have and I iamgine I always will. I do love Nick Hope as he is not your typical kicker. We didnt stop kicking PATs because Nick was struggling. In fact I would have continued to kick so he could get some work in if I could. The fact of the matter is that Tonga is our snapper and he had a minor injury and we had no one to snap for PATs. We werent being cheap and saving balls from going inot the stands. If any of you knew Mr Scott then you would know that he has the fans best interest at ALL times. Now you know the truth..

The reverse is probably also true. If they took the ball away from you (they did), you would probably have a hard time winning a lawsuit to get it back. That saying "possession is 9/10's of the law" is very true.

Understood. It is an interesting discussion though.
