Looking at the logo on the AIF website, I noticed that it's the same logo from defunct AF2 Stockton Lightning team:
www.aifprofootball.com/index.php?view=team&id=9&option=com_gridiron&Itemid=115
This is curious. From my understanding the AFL owns the names to all AFL and AF2 franchises. Unless the new owners of this team have bought the rights, they are either associated with the AFL or using their logo and name without approval and risking a lawsuit from the AFL.
A lawsuit from the AFL is not farfetched, they sued the new Lone Star Football League team in Laredo when they tried to call themselves the Rattlers (AFL has a team named the Arizona Rattlers). Laredo caved and changed their name rather than going to war with the AFL, but in their case they would've won going to court, but who wants to pay the lawyers over that trivial stuff.
It's been rumored the AF2 is restarting, could they be using the AIF as the beginnings of that restart. It seems weird they'd partner with AIF Owner John Morris, but stranger things have happened in this sport.
