Owners hope to make team bigger part of Topeka community
The Kansas Koyotes have new owners for the first time in their 10-year franchise history.
Pat Park and Nick Baumgartner have purchased the indoor football team from previous owner Ralph Adams, Park confirmed to The Topeka Capital-Journal on Friday.
The new owners formally will be introduced at a Tuesday news conference.
“We want to make this team the real deal for Topeka,” Park said. “We really want to see Topeka have a football team that matters.”
Both Park and Baumgartner own and operate local businesses. Park owns iView Security Systems, while Baumgartner owns Tradebank of Topeka.
Park said the Koyotes, who already have a new team logo, are expected to remain in the American Professional Football League. He added that in-depth details about the new-look Koyotes will be discussed Tuesday.
Park stressed the new owners are aiming to have the Koyotes play a bigger role in the community.
“We need Topeka, and in a way, I think Topeka needs us,” Park said. “In Topeka you have limited sports options. Not including high school or college sports, we have a hockey team and a football team. We need to make the football team a bigger deal.
“We think Topeka needs a good team that is an institution in the community.”
The Koyotes, who play their homes games in Landon Arena, have played 10 seasons in the APFL under the ownership of Adams.
The 2012 season was a trying one for both the Koyotes and the APFL, with three of the league’s eight teams folding during the course of the season. The Koyotes were held out of the playoffs for the first time in franchise history last season after the league’s competition committee ruled that too many of the Koyotes’ victories came by virtue of forfeit.
The Koyotes had three games canceled last season and were forced to play a fill-in team in the regular-season finale.
The team has captured six APFL titles, the last one coming in 2008.
