Although the first home game won’t happen until April 14, the 2012 Mid-Missouri Outlaws season has officially kicked off with the signing of four new players.
At a public event held Wednesday night at the Fox Event Center in downtown Sedalia, several indoor arena football players, coaches, owners, Bootleggers and fans gathered for a meet-and-greet event to promote the upcoming season for the American Professional Football League (APFL) team.
A signing ceremony was held as a highlight of the night, with Mark Moore, Jr., a college player from Mid-American Nazareth; Micah Brimer and Seth Brimer from Boonville, both played at CMU; and Derick Doerfler from Baker University.
“We felt like they are going to make our team a lot better in the areas where we had some deficiencies,” stated head coach and General Manager Ben Lyles. “We’re really stepping up the competition this season; we’ve gone out and hit the recruiting trail and we brought in some really good players.”
Forming the team was a multi-year process for c0-owner Chad Jackson. The first Outlaws team played three games in 2006.
“We had two indoor games and one outdoor game, and we ended up finishing up 2-1 that first year and got everybody hooked,” Jackson recalled.
“We started the Central Plains Football League, which is a semi-pro style of indoor football that’s played outdoors … and the Outlaws won the CPFL championship three years in a row (2007 – 2009) and in 2009 we were asked to go play the Iowa Blackhawks, that played in the APFL in Council Bluffs,” Jackson said.
The team came back from a 35-point deficit and beat the Blackhawks in front of a crowd of 5,000. That win spurred on Jackson to turn the Outlaws into the popular program it is today.
“We bit the bullet, bought turf and pads, and we’ve been inside ever since,” he noted. “It’s been a great progression.”
Jackson thanked the fans and the sponsors for a successful program, now in its third year.
“This is not really a football team. We are a marketing and advertising company that happens to put on a football game,” he concluded.
Jackson serves as co-owner along with Ethan Henson.
There are 13 games scheduled in the regular season this year, seven of them at home. There are also two open dates — April 7 and May 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. for each home game. The Outlaws will take on the Kansas Koyotes April 14 at the Mathewson Exhibition Center.
The regular season ends in late June and the playoffs and championship games will be played in July.
Teams from Denver, Cheyenne and Tulsa have been added to this season’s schedule, according to Ben Lyles. “It’s going to be a lot of exciting football. Those days of the CPFL, lopsided wins, losses, are well behind us now,” he said.
Some of the returning players include Marcus James, Kyle Middleton, Jacob Cahill, Jeremy Spears, Andre` Smith, Mark Abbey, Andrew Crum, Jeff Clancy, Tenney Barber, Anthony Collins, Ryan Lewis, Jajwan Shields and Marc Tiernan. There are a total of 30 players on the roster, consistent with APFL rules.
Kent Gwaltney was introduced as offensive and defensive line coach, and Kurt Brazil from Boonville was introduced as defensive coordinator.
Part of indoor arena football involves cheerleading, and this year the Bootleggers’ roster increased to 14, said Bootlegger head coach Dena Parkhurst. Bootlegger Kim Lockard serves as assistant coach and choreographer.
The 2012 program has secured a host of sponsors, including the Sedalia News Journal, which is a Platinum Sponsor of the Mid-Mo Outlaws this year.
Glad to see they have a few guys returning, and I hear the Brimer twins are pretty good. Hope they have a good season.
