A case of the APFL's Management not looking at playoff scenarios closely enough. Understandably Oklahoma's upset and the league has more egg on their face (which they never seem to mind).

APFL Playoffs 2012
June 24, 2012
Tulsa, OK The Oklahoma Defenders will not be playing a home playoff game on July 7th after all. The Defenders had previously announced in a June 16th press release (after beating Mid-Missouri Outlaws 75-10), that the win secured a home playoff game July 7th.
So what happened??
The Defenders state they were informed verbally by the APFL they would secure a home playoff by beating Mid-Missouri June 16th and were advised by the APFL to start selling tickets for a home playoff game. Then, the Defenders were told verbally this week that if they lost by 16+ points to Council Bluffs on June 23rd, they would play at Council Bluffs for the playoffs. The Defenders requested a meeting today to clarify the confusion. The APFL acknowledged they "suggested" the Defenders start selling tickets for a home playoff game, but indicate the Defenders misunderstood or presumed that they had secured a home playoff game. The APFL has not provided an official comment at the time of this press release.
What do the team records show?
As of today, the Defenders are 8-3 in the APFL, which includes one forfeit win. They will play the Mid-Missouri Outlaws this Saturday, June 30th (creating an opportunity to end the season 9-3 with a win). The league website, until around 4pm today, showed that Council Bluffs played one non-league game against Mills-County Militia on June 2nd (CB received a forfeit win that week since their league opponent folded and brought in the Militia to satisfy their home date with an exhibition match - BC), and are scheduled for a forfeit win against the Colorado Lightning on June 30th, thus indicating their final season league record would be 8-3 (9-3 will be CB's final league regular season record - BC). HOWEVER, the Defenders were notified today during the conference call they requested, that a deal was made on June 2nd. The Council Bluffs Express did indeed play a non-league replacement team on June 2nd, but, for the record, they were given a forfeit win over the Springfield Wolfpack, which was the team they were originally scheduled to play on June 2nd. The final result of the June 2nd games is that Springfield Wolfpack incurred a "double whammy!" The Wolfpack incurred 2 losses, on the same day, at the same time; one against Mid-Missouri Outlaws in a game that was played in Sedalia, and one forfeit loss to Council Bluffs Express (not entirely correct, Springfield was a replacement team at that point since the original team folded, the league switched up where the replacement teams were going is all, both Mid-Missouri and CB played replacement teams and both Colorado and Springfield received forfeit losses. Easy to be confused since the league never explains anything in detail, they prefer avoidance. - BC).
The Defenders were not notified of any of these proceedings nor was there any league communication until today regarding this forfeit win given to the Council Bluffs Express (despite the WolfPack playing at Mid-Missouri that night). There is a press release from Topeka, Kansas, dated May 31st, posted on the APFL website that only indicates the "unprecedented" change of schedule; it does not indicate a forfeit win to Council Bluffs over the Wolfpack. To make this even more confusing, the Defenders questioned---how could a team play a game and lose, and on the same day, be given a forfeit loss? The Defenders were then told by the APFL the game between Council Bluffs and Springfield was to be rescheduled; when asked when it was being rescheduled to, the APFL indicated the rescheduled game date has not been set. The APFL website has since been changed today, June 24, to show the "double whammy" Springfield Wolfpack incurred on June 2nd with a double-loss that day.
So what's the big deal?
IF the Council Bluffs Express vs Mills-County Militia June 2nd game had been recorded as a non-league game (and not a forfeit win for Council Bluffs against Springfield Wolfpack), the Defenders would have taken home playoff advantage with a June 30th win. Under this circumstance, the Defenders would finish the season with 12 league games (league record 9-3) versus Council Bluffs' 11 league games (league record 8-3) with no need for any discussion of tiebreaker rules. Again, this scenario is IF the June 2nd game would have been recorded as a non-league game which is what the Defenders thought was the case. However, the Mills-County Militia game against Council Bluffs Express is not being counted in the Council Bluffs record as a non-league game; instead, a June 2nd forfeit win has been assigned. With this change, and the Defenders loss to Council Bluffs Express on June 23rd, the Council Bluffs Express will now host a home playoff game.
What do the Defenders have to say?
The Defenders have identified it was a mistake to trust verbal indications about a home playoff game and that after carefully reviewing the schedule, a home playoff game could not have been confirmed after the June 16th game as they were advised. They indicate disagreement with the decision that was made on June 2, and have expressed their grievances regarding this and lack of notification of this event with the APFL. Oklahoma Defenders General Manager Lamar Baker commented, "We are still going to keep a positive outlook on the season, despite the problems that have plagued us the past several weeks. As an expansion team General Manager, I have learned from this as well; as I stated to the league today, one of the major problems is everything with this league is done on the phone and not in writing. I expressed my concerns, and my questions were addressed today. We are going to move forward from this and maintain the Defenders high level of integrity and ethical standards."
Yeah, what he said…let's move on! What's next?
The Defenders will play their final home game Saturday June 30th at the Tulsa Convention Center at 7:05pm against Mid-Missouri Outlaws as scheduled . They will then travel to Council Bluffs to play the Express in the APFL Playoffs on July 7th.
