Sorry, I know it's been awhile, but as promised here are the top 5 games of last season.
#5 Albany Panthers @ Columbus Lions
This was the third meeting between these two last season and did not disappoint. The Panthers came into this game with revenge on their minds as the Lions had handed them their first loss just four games prior. The Panthers took an 8-7 lead late in the first quarter, however, the Lions got hot in the second, capitalizing on several turnovers and a safety to take a 33-15 lead into the half. The second half started the way the first ended, with Columbus adding to their lead with a Trey Crum uno on the kickoff. However, that would be the only point they would score in the 3rd quarter. The Panthers came alive in the second half outscoring the Lions 42-21 through the last two quarters, proving to everyone why this has become one of the biggest rivalrys in indoor football. Final Score: Albany 57, Columbus 54
#4 Columbus Lions @ Richmond Raiders
The first game in PIFL history saw seven lead changes and the beginning of the Antwon Young era in Richmond. Richmond held a 15-13 lead at the end of the first, but Columbus would battle back and take the lead into halftime 32-29. The second half saw the game continue to see-saw back and forth until the Raiders took the lead for good late in the third quarter. Antwon Young scored 6 total TDs, announcing his presence to the league with authority. Final Score: Richmond 64, Columbus 58
#3 Alabama Hammers @ Louisiana Swashbucklers
The season finale for both, with the Bucs heading into the playoffs and the Hammers looking to end their season with a win against a playoff team. These two teams put on a show in Lake Charles. It looked like the Bucs would coast through, taking a 55-35 lead in the 3rd quarter. However, the Hammers came charging back, taking their first lead with a little less than 10 minutes in the game, 64-62. LA would score again retaking the lead, but with 3:31 to play, Alabama was back on top 70-69. The Bucs would take a rush-heavy approach to drive down the field, with veteran Kendrick Perry plowing in from a yard out with just 38 seconds in the game. The Hammers would recover the onside kick at the LA 23, but Arvell Nelson would throw an INT at the Bucs 3 with just 7 seconds remaining capping off a wild game. Final Score: Louisiana 75, Alabama 70
#2 Richmond Raiders @ Albany Panthers
PIFL Cup I, enough said. The PIFL saw it's first season end with a classic matchup of #1 vs #2. The Panthers never trailed in this game, capping off their second straight championship season. However, it was the way the Raiders played this game that made it special. Richmond came into Albany unshaken by the Panthers 20-2 All-time record at home and hung with Albany all the way to the end. The Panthers were on the verge of a 16 point lead late in the second, but the Raiders intercepted Darnell Kennedy two yards into the endzone and returned it for the TD, pulling to within two. Albany would take a 36-30 lead into the half and would never look back, even as Richmond tied the score in the 4th. An ejection to star QB Antwon Young, as well as the play of Albany's Antwontis Cutts (Rec. TD, Kickoff return TD, Def. TD), would prove to be too much for richmond to overcome. Final Score: Albany 60, Richmond 56
#1 Alabama hammers @ Knoxville NightHawks
A game between the worst two teams of last year would prove to be the most exciting. The Hawks had not won a game all year and looked to the rematch with hated rival Alabama as a springboard for the remainder of their season. Knoville would score the games first 14 points, but from there the lead would change hands six times. Tied at 51 at the end of regulation, the game would become the first OT game in league history. The Hawks got the ball first and didn't waste any time, scoring on the first play of OT on a Willie Copeland pass to Ryan Schuck. Alabama would answer with a TD of their own, but after a defensive stop forced an Alabama FG, Knoxville took over down three, needing a TD for the win. Again, Willie Copeland dropped back on their first play and floated a beautiful pass to ryan Schuck, who made a spectacular diving catch in the back of the endzone, securing the Hawks first win in franchise history and capping off the most exciting game of the 2012 PIFL Season. Final Score: Knoxville 64, Alabama 61 2OT
A LOT of good games last year but in my opinion, these were the best of the best. Feel free to agree/disagree with whatever you like and, as always, thanks for reading and enjoy!
