After three years in the LFL, some members of the Seattle Mist can finally celebrate a Championship. Now, their goal is for the entire team to be able to as well.
Along with Chris Michaelson, the G.M. of the BC Angels and head coach of the Mist, Jessica Hopkins and Christine Moore played big roles in BC winning the championship. In the 2013 U.S. season, they are looking to lead Seattle to become the only team not named the Los Angeles Temptation to win a U.S. Lingerie Bowl. “We are HOT after winning this championship in Canada and it just makes us more hungry to succeed in our upcoming season” Moore said. She will be taking the field with Hopkins and the rest of the Mist on December 15th against the BC Angels at the ShoWare Center. It is a Champion Angels team coming to play a team still looking for their first play-off spot.
Mist captain Hopkins thinks that this is the year. “It’s given me a taste of what our team has the capability of experiencing, and it makes me more hungry to share that experience and feeling with my Seattle Mist family” said Hopkins. She went on to mention that she will push her “teammates daily and accept nothing but a Championship this upcoming year.”
The first step towards that Championship goal for the Mist is the Pacific Cup, fast approaching on December 15th. Coach Michaelson, Moore and Hopkins will look to beat the Angels in front of a sold out crowd. The Seattle fans, known as the “MistFits” are in for a show says Moore. ShoWare Center is home to the LFL’s 8th Man of the Year and many Mist members including defensive coach Travis Russo believe the Angels may be in for a shock.
Angels head coach Kevin Snell thinks it is just what his players need. “It’s not just another game. It’s a totally different feel and this is what I wanted for my players” he said. “As Canadians we always want to see how we can match up against the U.S. athletes.”
This will be a good test for the Angels, not only because the Mist are returning 12 veterans, but because BC’s leading tackler and second leading receiver will be playing against them. Moore says this is more than an exhibition to the Mist, and the Angels will have their hands full. “Our defense is nasty and our offense is finesse. We are ready to unleash all the work we’ve put in [during] the off-season prepping for this game. We are not looking at it as an exhibition game but a game to prove to all the doubters that the Mist are not playing around this year” she said. Moore added that the Mist took advantage of the extended off-season to be more prepped for the upcoming regular season and to advance their game. The Mist is a deep team, and she says every player can play almost every position without losing a beat.
For the Angels, their depth will be tested with two key players from their line-up on the opposing team. Depth is a topic sure to be addressed by the BC coaching staff as they prepare for next season. Coach Snell is still working on an off-season schedule but notes that this is his team’s first off season, and there is plenty of work to do. “I now will have to teach them the importance of off-season when it comes to training, eating, and developing their weakness in each individual’s game” said Snell.
For the Mist, this game is not only an experience, but also a chance to make a statement on their dedication to winning their own Championship. Getting an opportunity to play an exhibition game with a team fresh from winning a title is a good test for the Mist to see just how ready they are. Hopkins thinks the Angels may be in for a surprise.
“When the topic would come up [about the game], it was really hard to bite my tongue. I keep saying ‘these girls have no idea what is about to go down on December 15th’. It’s going to be a fun game, and I’m looking forward to going head to head with the Angels. I guess we’ll find out who works harder” Hopkins said.
One thing is for sure. This game is going to be another great showcase of how the LFL continues to expand across borders and increase the intensity of the game. Canada vs. the United States, rookies vs. veterans, BC Angels vs. Seattle Mist: The Pacific Cup kicks off December 15th and it will be a game to remember.
