The Port Huron Patriots are off and running with a new season.
The Patriots opened the season Saturday with a 62-2 exhibition victory against the Michigan Renegades, a semi-professional outdoor football team from Detroit.
The Patriots jumped on the Renegades early and didn’t look back. The Renegades points came off of a Patriots conversion attempt, which was intercepted and returned for a score.
“Tonight was all about working on ourselves,” Patriots tight end and receiver Durocher Miller said. “We wanted to improve on what we do.”
While the Patriots do have a lot to work on, especially in their kicking game, it was apparent early that they wouldn’t face a true test.
At points during the game, the Renegades had to confer with officials just to understand the indoor rules.
“It is so different,” Renegades cornerback Deon Griffin said after the defeat. “I think we could have been better prepared. We didn’t know all of the rules and we didn’t have much time to adjust.”
The Patriots did not make stats available after the game, but it was easy to understand just how dominant they were. The game was never in doubt, as Port Huron scored easily on its first two possession and by the time halftime the game was already out of hand.
The Patriots will return Saturday at home against the Southeast Michigan Mercenaries in another game that will put the Patriots against a semiprofessional outdoor team.
“We have to use these games to get better,” Patriots linebacker and Port Huron High School graduate P.J. Jackson said. “This is still an opportunity to improve and that’s what we are focused on.”
The regular season opener is Feb. 9 against the Detroit Thunder, which is also owned by Patriots coach and owner Dave Kinsman.
