LA Temptation Stars Hit New South Wales

The New South Wales Surge girls had good reason to have an extra bounce in their step last week. They were graced with the presence of three LA Temptation Stars in Monique Gaxiola, Danielle Harvey and Australia’s own Chloe Butler.
Coaches Jason Gaffey and Teren Tan looked on while the Temptation girls took over and put the Surge squad through a rigorous stretching and warm up program. Once the blood was pumping and the girls were warmed up it was time to go through several different running routes and plays.
Watching Monique, Danielle and Chloe lead the way was a huge buzz for the girls and gave them real insight into how the women of the LFL are expected to prepare. Surge QB Renee ‘The Assassin’ Straumietis said that training with the girls was “absolutely awe inspiring! They made every girl step up their game tonight. They have lit the fire and hunger in every one of us, to strive to be at their level.”
Straumietis continued, “I thought I knew how much I wanted to be part of the LFL before. After this session, ****, I’m going to find that little extra every time I train because I NEED to be in the LFL and will do anything to be starting.”
The NSW Surge are going to be the benchmark in the Australian LFL next year. Everyone involved with the squad has the confidence that is required to take this team to the highest level. Monique Gaxiola said, “These girls are phenomenal. I didn’t know what to expect coming in. They definitely impressed me. They are strong and I respect them a lot.”
Defensive player Shari ‘Amazon’ Onley was on cloud nine during practice. Monique Gaxiola was the reason Onley wanted to start playing in the LFL, so she was super pumped to meet her idol. When asked what it was like to train alongside three LFL Champions, Shari said “The weight of their words is huge. It is particularly encouraging to know that we are on the right track and that athletically and physically we are on par with the USA teams. That in itself was awfully encouraging to hear.”
Australia’s own Chloe Butler, who plays for the LA Temptation, has been a regular visitor to Surge training over the past few months. She describes Surge defensive player Bonnie Gillespie as, “The Surge! The Surge of power, speed and aggression.” LA’s Monique Gaxiola thinks Gillespie “is just phenomenal. She’s a little ball of muscle. She knows her size and uses it well.”
This season, Gaxiola and the Temptation are going after their 4th LFL Championship in as many years. When asked about the upcoming US season, Danielle Harvey says that “the 4th Championship is in the wind, and it is coming. I don’t feel like there is any threat out there!” She was also complimentary in her thoughts on the Surge girls. “Honestly, I rate them at about a 6.5. They have got some work to do, but the women are very strong out here, like Bonnie Gillespie… she is amazing… she’s a cutie.”
In terms of giving the girls advice heading forward, Harvey said, “I would definitely advise them to hit the gym and hit the weights. The stronger women win in this league, and we don’t have any room for anyone that can’t block.”
Bonnie ‘Lil Nug’ Gillespie enjoyed training with the LA Temptation girls and said of the experience, “Tiring! No it was great, I loved it, and I learned a lot. When mistakes were made, [the LA girls] would always bring it up and pound me for it. I soaked it all up.” In response to the Australian LFL season kicking off in December 2013 Bonnie had these words for the competition. “You guys better be ready cause little red is going to come at you!”
The next step for the NSW Surge is the open tryout, which takes place in early February. Coach Teren Tan cannot wait. “From there, we will have 30 to 35 girls to train. We are really going to break it down, so it’s back to the football fundamentals again to make sure we are all on the same page. We’ll start to work in a system before we have a mini camp.”
When it comes to the inaugural Australian LFL season, the two coaches are ready and raring to go. Teren was asked if he and Jason Gaffey had itchy feet. “Having itchy feet is an understatement, so to speak. We play this out with each other on a daily basis, scheming on how we are going to run games against certain [teams.] We live, eat and breathe this at the moment. We can’t wait till 2013, we are really going to try to set the tone with the LFL in Australia and shock the rest of the world.”
On the possibility of one day playing against the best USA and Canadian LFL teams, Teren said “We are more than happy for that to happen, and we will take it to them.” One thing is for certain. The smell of success is at every Surge training session. These girls are preparing for battle and will take on anyone who gets in their way of becoming the best LFL team in Australia. From there, the world is their Oyster.
