Bemidji, MN —Axemen President Chris Kokalis conducted a nationwide search to find the right candidate for the head coach position for the Indoor Football League’s newest team. Experience, leadership, desire to build a championship squad, and character topped the list for what the team was looking for in the coach that was going to lead the Axemen in its inaugural season. Kokalis made that clear today introducing two time Indoor Football League coach of the year and coaching veteran Robert Fuller as the first head coach in team history.
Fuller joins the Axemen with quite an impressive resume coaching indoor football for the past eight years including six years as head coach. Most recently he was the head coach of the IFL’s Green Bay Blizzard where he coached in 2012-2013 compiling a regular season record of 12-8 and leading the Blizzard to the United Conference Championship in 2012. Prior to his time with the Blizzard, Fuller served as the Head Coach and Director of Football Operations of the Fairbanks Grizzlies. Fuller led the Grizzlies to a 10-5 record and a Pacific Division title. The team set records for franchise wins and points scored.
“The amount of experience Coach Fuller brings to this franchise was one of the major factors during the hiring process”, said Kokalis. “The respect from his peers and those throughout the football world along with his commitment to excellence and the high bar he holds of himself and his players are a large part of why he has been so successful over the years”.
Coach Fuller was named the Indoor Football League’s coach of the year in 2011 and 2012. For his efforts off the field and in the community, the IFL awarded Coach Fuller the 2011 and 2012 Adam Pringle Award.
Fuller received his first head coaching opportunity in 2004 with the Tri-City Diesel in Kearney, NE. Taking over a team that went 4-10 the year before, he engineered one of the biggest turnarounds in the NIFL by leading the Diesel to an 11-3 regular season record, a Pacific South Division Title, and the first playoff appearance in franchise history. For his efforts, Fuller was selected as the 2004 Pacific South Division Coach of the Year.
After one season in Tri City, Fuller accepted the Head Coach and General Manager duties with the Omaha Beef in 2005. In two seasons with the Beef, his teams recorded 17 wins and extended Omaha’s home playoff hosting streak to seven straight years.
Since the end of the 2012 season, Coach Fuller has had the privilege of coaching seven players that have had workouts with National Football League teams. RB LaRon Council (Green Bay Packers), DB Aaron Moore (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), OL Shannon Breen (Indianapolis Colts), DB Reggie Sullivan (Packers/Carolina Panthers), DL Lebron Daniel (Packers), DL Junior Aumavae (New York Jets) and BJ Hill (Packers), have all worked out for NFL teams after being on an indoor team coached by Fuller.
In addition to indoor football, Fuller has spent seven seasons coaching various positions at his alma mater, the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. This season he served as the Marauder’s offensive line coach where he coached his final game this past Saturday in Bemidji when the Marauders took on Bemidji State. He also works as a teacher with at-risk youth for a local non-profit organization in Bismarck.
Season tickets for Indoor Football action start as low as $56 offering families a cost-effective, family friendly environment. Monday’s press conference is open to the public. Everyone in the community is welcome and encouraged to attend!
