It's not been a good week for computers in my household. My laptop's hard drive died without prior warning noises or anything, which is unusual. I was unable to recover the data as well, a first for me. Even freezing the drive didn't work this time. I'm good at not keeping much stuff on the computer and move or save the stuff directly to my external drive, which is backed up. However I usually do that once a week. So I lost just under a week's worth of stuff, not a big deal, but still enough to piss me off. The biggest thing was my favorites history, you'd think I would've backed that up, but I was overconfident in my abilities to recover files from dead hard drives since I was like the Perry Mason of recovering data. Not so this time though...still pisses me off...I hate losing. To top things off, tonight my other system caught a virus. I may be able to clean it without formatting it, but it's still enough to make me want to go hunting the people who create these things and burn them alive...sort of a slow roasting, then turn up the heat when the end approaches type of thing. I guess I got overconfident in the computer security realm as well. In the past I used to use anti-spyware, but stopped. I thought my safe practices and knowledge of what to avoid was enough, but now the spyware makers are infecting you from ads and such, so even if you go to a safe site, that site can still be hijacked and you can catch something from it, etc, etc. I guess the moral for me is to crack down on my computer security once again. Anti-virus and a firewall aren't enough, you need anti-spyware as well. Even with all that, you're never totally safe. I also need to back up my files daily now or just not keep anything at all directly on my computer. A pain, but if you do it every day it becomes habit and you get used to it. I'm still pissed and want to strangle an ox with my bare hands though. Agh.
