Changes abound in Indoor Football League
By Jeff Morrow, Herald sports editor
KENNEWICK -- The 2011 Indoor Football League season got under way this last week, and the league has a different look to it.
The number of teams dropped from 25 in 2010 to 22 this season.
Gone are the 2010 champion Billings Outlaws, whose owner folded the franchise.
The Alaska Wild, which folded in the middle of last season, isn't back, either.
New to the league is the Wenatchee Valley Venom, coming over from the American Indoor Football Association.
So is the Wyoming Cavalry, an old foe of the Tri-Cities Fever from the National Indoor Football League days in 2005.
As with any indoor football league, you need a scorecard sometimes to tell who the players are.
We'll take a look at the Fever roster in Friday's paper. Here's a quick look at the other teams in this year's IFL.
Allen Wranglers: Franchise moved in the offseason from Arkansas to Texas. ... Former Dallas Cowboys WR Drew Pearson is the team's general manager.
Amarillo Venom: DB Cashmin Thomas was a first-team all-league selection in 2010.
Arizona Adrenaline: Ex-Fever players DB Antar Brame, RB Paris Moore and DB Muhammad Shamsid-Deen are with the expansion team.
Bloomington Extreme: WR James Walton was a second-team all-league player last season for the Billings Outlaws.
Bricktown Brawlers: Expansion franchise in Oklahoma City was announced the same day the city's AFL franchise was folded.
Chicago Slaughter: Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Steve McMichael is the team's head coach. Ex-Bear QB Jim McMahon is an owner. ... OL Rasche Hill, a second-team All-IFL player in 2010, returns. ... WR Luke McArdle played for Omaha last season and was a first-team All-IFL selection. ... The Slaughter also picked up QB Ben Sankey, a second-team all-star last season with Omaha.
Colorado Ice: Heron O'Neal, who coached the Billings Outlaws to the league title last season, will be the Ice's defensive coordinator. ... WR Lemans Casimier played for the Outlaws last season until being traded midseason to the Ice.
Fairbanks Grizzlies: DL Mike Quinn (Eastern Washington) returns as a starter.
Green Bay Blizzard: Kick returner B.J. Hill is back after being named second-team All-IFL last season.
Kent Predators: Head coach Keith Evans is a former Fever assistant coach when the team was in the af2. ... Plenty of familiar Northwest faces here: DL Fevaei Ahmu (from Washington State), WR Michael Bush (WSU), ex-Fever RB Jarvis Dunn, DB Xavier Hicks (WSU) and LB Greg Trent (WSU). ... Vaughn Lesuma (WSU) started on the offensive line last year for Fairbanks. ... Standouts from last year's squad include QB Charles McCullum and DB Jeremiah Captain.

Omaha Beef: There is a WR on the team's roster named O.J. Simpson.
Reading Express: QB Andrew Carcich played for Alaska last season before the team folded. He then finished the season with the Fever.
Richmond Revolution: The Revolution will play all of its home games this season at an outdoor stadium while the team's indoor facility is built.
Sioux Falls Storm: Billings' folding was a good deal for the Storm, which lost to the Outlaws in the final last year. All-IFL first-team DL Michael Bazemore landed with the team. So did all-star QB Chris Dixon and second-team LB Kelly Rouse. ... WR James Terry was a second-team All-IFL pick last season.
