Can I change my prediction on who will it all? I'm not liking my Canton pick anymore and I'm liking the way the new Saginaw incarnation is turning out.
Johnstown had guys playing both ways? Was it necessity (probably) or are they just that good (probably not). They need to get that fixed.

Saginaw Sting off to 2-0 start after 59-41 win over Johnstown Generals

SAGINAW — On one play, Chuck Dowdell managed to show off his ability as both a wide receiver and a quarterback.
On the Saginaw Sting’s second play from scrimmage, Dowdell caught a touchdown pass, turned, and threw a perfect strike to SVSU receiver Nick Gallina, seated in the second level of the bleachers.
“I had to thank them for coming,” Dowdell said.
Dowdell’s touchdown catch was one of three first-quarter touchdowns in a 59- 41 Sting win over the Johnstown Generals front of an announced crowd of 2,829 Friday night at The Dow Event Center.
The Sting quickly went up 23-0 against a Generals team playing its season opener. The Sting opened their season last week with a win over Eastern Kentucky.
Sting coach John Mize said his team benefited from having one game in the books.
“You could see it,” Mize said. “They had a few guys playing both ways, that had to take an affect on them. Especially being a first game.”
The Sting are now the only 2-0 team in the Ultimate Indoor Football League. They are off next week before returning March 13 for a home game against the Huntington Hammer.
After going down early, the Generals fought back to as close as seven points, 35-28 in the second quarter, before the Sting pulled away again in the second half.
“We had to get everyone together at halftime and tell them the game ain’t over,” Mize said.
Quarterback Tommy Jones threw eight touchdown passes, four to LaVaughn Macon, two to Dowdell and one to Yvens Louis.
Dowdell, a second cousin to the first Sting quarterback Damon Dowdell, earned player of the game honors.
SVSU’s starting quarterback most of last year, Dowdell hurt his shoulder in SVSU’s sixth game of the year, which hampered his throwing ability the rest of the season.
But that injury also forced him to take repetitions as a wide receiver, easing his transition to the new position for the Sting.
“It worked out for the best,” Dowdell said. “They want me to play both, I’m up for anything to help the team.”
Dowdell played nearly the entire game as a wide receiver. His one drive as a quarterback ended in an interception. But as a wideout, Dowdell shined for the second straight week. He hauled in a game-high 12 catches in his first Sting game.
“He catches everything,” Mize said. “He’s just an all-around, pure athlete.”
The game wasn’t without its flaws. Kicker Chris Kollias suffered a quadriceps injury on an extra point in the second quarter. Without a second kicker, the Sting went for two point conversions the rest of the game. Linebacker Tony Woods and wide receiver Kevin Brown handled kickoffs the rest of the game.
Mize also said he was disappointed with the number of dropped balls throughout the game.
“We still have guys dropping passes that shouldn’t be,” Mize said. “Those will be addressed tomorrow at film session.”
But as the league’s highest scoring team and the only undefeated team, Mize things the Sting have set the bar high two games in.
“We’re the team to beat right now,” Mize said. “I think we are.”
Jacobs coming?
Mize said he is interested in signing John Jacobs, a Midland Dow graduate and former All-American linebacker at Saginaw Valley State. Jacobs spent training camp with the Green Bay Blizzard of the Indoor Football Leagues
