Johnstown’s fourth try at professional indoor football will begin tonight as the Johnstown Generals play their home opener against the Northern Kentucky River Monsters at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
Kick-off will be at 7:30 p.m. for the Ultimate Indoor Football League contest.
Johnstown is 0-1 after falling 59-41 at Saginaw, Mich., last weekend.
“We’re looking to get back on track,” Johnstown coach Quen-teen Robinson said. “We’re ready to get what we deserve for working hard. We’re ready to get it started.”
Northern Kentucky opened with a 63-41 victory at Canton, Ohio.
Tonight’s game is being billed by the Generals as a battle of former NFL quarterbacks.
The Generals’ David Dinkins once was on the Buffalo Bills roster, first signing as a quarterback and later taking on a variety of roles during his two NFL seasons.
River Monsters quarterback Jared Lorenzen was a third-string quarterback behind Eli Manning and Anthony Wright when the New York Giants won Super Bowl XLII.
Lorenzen set school records in offense, passing yards and passing touchdowns at the University of Kentucky.
“I know his (Lorenzen’s) pedigree and I understand he’s played at the NFL level,” Robinson said. “At the same time, I can speak for Mr. Dinkins and he’s ready to go.”
Dinkins also played for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe and was on several indoor teams in the AFL, IFL, CIFL and AIFA.
At Morehead State he became the first player in Division I-AA to throw for more than
5,000 yards (5,572) and rush for more than 3,000 yards (3,765).
He is a member of the Morehead State Hall of Fame.
Northern Kentucky will be without defensive end Luke Scarborough and assistant coach Doug Chavis, as each serves a one-game suspension handed down by UIFL Director of Officials Mike Zyglis.
The suspensions resulted from a physical altercation during last week’s game at Canton.
The Canton Cougars lost to suspension linebacker Roosevelt Benjamin and defensive back Harriel Moore for the March 12 game at Johnstown.
The Generals fell behind 22-0 at Saginaw last week before closing within six points.
Saginaw used another scoring spurt to pull away.
In the opener, Calvin Stephens, a wide receiver from Seton Hill University, caught a pair of touchdown passes, and California (Pa.) University product Antoine Bagwell had two touchdown receptions for the Generals.
Indoor veteran quarterback Dinkins tossed all four touchdown passes and had no interceptions.
Somerset High School graduate Josh Simmons, a defensive back who played at Shippensburg, returned an interception for a touchdown.
The Generals’ roster includes many familiar names, as coach Quenteen Robinson, a former Johnstown indoor star player, made sure his team has a local presence.
The Generals follow the Johnstown Riverhawks, Johnstown J-Dogs and Johnstown Jackals in the line of indoor teams to play in the city.
The Ultimate Indoor Football League is a professional indoor football league with six teams in five states.
In addition to Johnstown, league cities include: Saginaw, Mich. (Saginaw Sting); Canton, Ohio (Canton Cougars); Highland Heights, Ky. (Northern Kentucky River Monsters); Pikeville, Ky. (Eastern Kentucky Drillers); and Huntington, W.Va.. (Huntington Hammer).
“I think we’re going to have good fan support. That should be somewhat of an advantage,” Robinson said. “It’s always better playing at home than on the road.”
Ticket prices begin at $7. A special promotion gives away one free ticket with the purchase of one adult ticket.
Kids age 2 to 12 are admitted free.
