Indoor squads take long look at Germain Arena
UIFL, Stingrays get in touch with local facility
Mar. 9, 2011
A pair of indoor football leagues are looking to call Germain Arena home.
The arena's vice president of event programming, Sammy Wallace, confirmed Tuesday that he has been in discussions with representatives from the Ultimate Indoor Football League for the last six to eight weeks.
Wallace said he has also had "some contact" with Jay Lawrence, the president of the Florida Stingrays, a local indoor football team unaffiliated with a league.
"We don't have any agreement with any football league," Wallace said.
"(The UIFL has) expressed some interest, and we've had some initial discussions. They've inquired with a number of facilities, and their intent is to form a southern league."
On Tuesday, the UIFL's web site, which shows active teams in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky, listed the Florida Tarpons in Fort Myers as one of its expansion teams. But UIFL co-founder Andrew Haines said via e-mail that information was posted prematurely, adding he could not comment further about the Florida Tarpons.
In a release sent Tuesday, Stingrays representatives warned that the team might be outbid for rights to play at Germain Arena by an out-of-state club. The e-mail said the Stingrays have been planning to play at Germain for "almost a year."
According to Wallace, since the arenafootball2 Florida Firecats left Germain in 2009, five indoor leagues have contacted him about using the facility.
"We're certainly open," Wallace said.
"However, the conditions have to be right with the scheduling format we have, and they have to be responsible business partners and representatives of the community."
