IFL's Week Two Recap
The Indoor Football League’s second week of competition hosted 8 games. Close contests show teams at even keel as we move into week three.
Week 2 began with the Green Bay Blizzard visiting the Bloomington Extreme Saturday evening in hopes of getting their first win of the season. The Extreme took a quick lead in the game outscoring the Blizzard 13-7 in the first quarter. The Blizzard did put up a fight outscoring the Extreme in the second quarter by 3 points; however, the Extreme continued their brawl against the Blizzard. For the second consecutive weekend we saw a highly accurate Hinds deliver precision passing for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Blizzard was no match for the diverse playbook of the Extreme with a final score of 42-26.
The Saturday evening game between the Reading Express versus the Chicago Slaughter turned out to be a very eventful game at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL. Reading Express took an immediate lead at the beginning of the game scoring two consecutive touchdowns after the Slaughter made the first score of the game, ending the first quarter at 14-7, Reading. Though the two teams played very hard, it came down to the toughness of the defense to win the game. Reading delivered 1 sack on the Slaughter QB Sankey to the Slaughter’s 4 on QB Chris Malleo. Christopher Rodgers also added an interception to seal the game at 59-55.
The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks traveled to Richmond, VA to play against the Richmond Revolution Saturday evening. The Steelhawks started the game with one goal in mind and that was to win their first game in team history, and the Steelhawks played with fury. The Revolution took a late lead in the fourth quarter with the score at 34-38 and only 59 seconds left on the clock. Though Richmond played a hard fought game, and maintained life throughout the game, it was no match of the Steelhawks determination. With only 1.2 seconds left on the Revolution’s 17 yard line, Steelhawks’ QB AJ Roque made a touchdown pass to Irani DeAraujo to seal the Steelhawks first victory in team history, 41-38.
The Colorado Ice hosted the Wyoming Cavalry on Saturday evening, which was an action-packed game from beginning to end. The Ice led the first half after a 44-yard kick return from Lemans Casimier. Wyoming played a very tight game as well as, forcing the Ice defense to play harder by delivering a sack in the first quarter and 3 interceptions. In the final minutes of the game, Eryk Anders of the Colorado Ice made a tackle and stripped the ball in the Colorado Ice end zone resulting in a Colorado touchdown the close out the game at 30-39.
In our IFL “Game of the Week” the Tri-Cities Fever found themselves in Wenatchee Saturday to face their intra state rival Venom. After a displeasing loss to the Fever in their first pre-season meeting, Wenatchee now had the chance to turn things around in front of their fans at home. Houston Lillard of the Fever would pass for 6 touchdowns and lead them into the fourth quarter down by one point. It would be smash mouth football in the fourth producing 48 points, but a 31 yard run by Asaeli Hikila would give the Venom their second win at 59-52.
The Bricktown Brawlers made their hometown debut on Sunday as they faced the Allen Wranglers. Ben Birmingham would start things off with a touchdown handed off by QB Reggie Bell. As the game progressed a back and forth game would move into the fourth quarter tied at 33. Kewan Dewberry would throw his fourth touchdown pass of the evening to put the Wranglers up by 6. Brawlers would find themselves held to a field goal with minimal time left leaving the game at 39-36 Wranglers.
The Predators (1-1) and Grizzlies (0-2) kicked off on Sunday with both teams looking to make up for their last loss. The Predators coming off of a record breaking loss would host a 0-1 Grizzlies team in their second games of the season. The offense of Kent would prove that their last performance was no fluke as they put up 71 points on the defending conference champions, and the Grizzlies would receive their second loss as the games ended 56-41.
Week 2 of the Indoor Football League will close out with the Wichita Wild playing against the Nebraska Danger at 7:05pm on Monday, March 07, 2011.
