CANTON, OH – The Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) is pleased to announce the Players of the Week, for the week ending March 28. (UIFL Weekly Report)
For the fifth straight week, a player from the Northern Kentucky River Monsters has claimed a weekly honor from the league, while for the first time this season, the special teams laurel was not won by a player from the state of Kentucky. Through the first five weeks, a player from either Eastern or Northern Kentucky has claimed the award.
Despite having the league’s top defensive unit, this marks the first time since the league’s opening week that a Huntington player earned the UIFL’s defensive award.
River Monsters quarterback Jared Lorenzen earned the Conquest Cards Offensive Player of the Week honor after throwing for a UIFL record nine touchdowns in NKY’s 62-53 victory over Canton Monday. He was 18-of-39 for 294 yards with two interceptions. He threw two touchdowns over five plays that helped Northern Kentucky overcome a seven-point fourth quarter deficit.
Andre Portis, Huntington’s defensive end, was named the Terry’s Tire Town Defensive Player of the Week. He spearheaded a unit that handcuffed Johnstown on 33 yards offensively and a season-low 16 points. Portis recorded 3.5 sacks to go along with a team-high six tackles.
The Edge Sportswear Special Teams Player of the Week is Saginaw’s Chris Kolias, who converted 9 of 11 on his extra-point attempts with an UNO.
Week seven of the UIFL features a battle for first place as Huntington (4-1), riding a three-game winning streak, travels to Northern Kentucky (4-1) 7:30 p.m. Friday. In other action, Johnstown (1-4) hosts Saginaw (3-2) 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Canton goes to Eastern Kentucky 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
