even though I saw him at the end of his career, the answer is Jerry Rice.

JR is good, but no way he's the best ever like the NFL's Top 100 voted him in as. Sorry, a WR is not number one...please.

because Jerry Rice was a wide receiver doesn't disqualify him from being the best player ever. That doesn't even make sense.
He IS the best of all time. That is widely accepted.

Rice is so far above any other receiver that this isn't unreasonable, for sure. Such a factor would have to be considered for any player in the top 10 there.
Jim Brown would also be a reasonable #1, but the Browns did win more before he showed up than after...so you gotta wonder.
If you didn't vote Rice as the best ever, I think Lawrence Taylor would have to be it. Sure, others may have better numbers, but none of them ever changed the entire dynamic of the game.

Oh, as for my time...Rice, pretty fairly. But considering my geographic whereabouts and what games I saw (basically, on doubleheader weeks the 1:00 game was Detroit and the 4:15 was Dallas), Barry Sanders was pretty **** good.

And if this were Tecmo, it would be Bo Jackson, period.

I played my brother (8 years younger) and some of his buddies in a game of Tecmo once...they all had done their research on the best teams (generally, Niners, Chiefs, etc)...and I was fine with that..."dude, you can be the Niners, I'll be the LA Raiders."
Hey, I had trouble stopping the Niners offense. But when Bo Jackson can go 22-550 or so (against a human), I don't really care that much.

Rice is far and away the best wide receiver, but not best player ever.
How the NFL Network did their Top 100 Voting was by giving a ballot with players already on it by position and asked voters to rank them by giving them a score from 1-10. Rice got all 10's except for one 9 by Pat Summerall who said no one deserved a 10. How the NFL Network should've handled the voting would be to add another layer and take their top scorers and rank them from there (but that would be too much work).
If you're a general manager, you sure aren't taking a WR first for your team. A WR is nothing without a QB to throw him the ball (many think Montana should be ahead of him) or a line to protect the QB. Rice didn't make Montana or Steve Young. Montana was great before Rice arrived. I remember Rice costing the 49ers a playoff game against the Giants by dropping a wide open touchdown that would've won the game for them at the beginning of his career. Best WR...by far. Best player...please.
Jim Brown is the best player to me, if I'm taking anyone from history, it's him. Go ahead and take your WR. BTW, Rice played on an all-star team, he wouldn't even be near the top if he'd played for a crappy team. Brown would've been great on any team.

You can have Jim Brown; he was a fine player. Browns won more before he played (3) than with him (1).
Before the greatest game ever played, the Giants held Jim Brown to 8 yards rushing (this includes one 20-yard carry...which means he had -12 yards for the rest of the game). Nice job by him helping the Browns beat a team that only scored 10 points in the game to begin with (10-0 Giants win).
You want to find one bad play by Jerry Rice, OK fine...I just found one horrible game by Jim Brown that cost the Browns a shot at being in the NFL Championship (a week after he popped the Giants for a buck fifty in a 13-10 loss that forced the playoff). Everyone has a bad game. Both players were great. One was great in an era where it was all about the running back. One was great in an era where it was all about the quarterback. With the rules changes in football being so massive, we don't really know how either would have done in the other's rule set.

And besides...isn't the premise of this thread the best player in my NFL history? Jim Brown retired 16 years before I was born. :-P

I'll take the RB any day. Put Rice on an average team and he wouldn't be where he is today, Brown would be still regarded as the best ever no matter who he played for in the same vein as O.J. Simpson (who played on a terrible Bills team). I'd also take Ray Lewis over Rice like I posted above...Montana as well. Next.
