CINCINNATI, OH -- The Port Huron Predators didn't quit, but an early deficit Friday night was too much to overcome against the Continental Indoor Football League's top team.
Despite closing the gap late, Port Huron lost to the Cincinnati Commandos 47-22 at the Cincinnati Gardens.
The Predators (2-3) trailed 7-0 after the first quarter and 26-6 at halftime. They trailed by as much as 33-6 in the third quarter before storming back early in the fourth quarter.
After a 42-yard touchdown run by Anthony Gay, the Predators trailed 33-22 with plenty of time remaining in the fourth quarter.
"We just didn't make plays when we needed to," Predators coach John Forti said. "That was the story of the game."
The Predators wouldn't pull any closer, and the Commandos closed the game with a pair of touchdowns.
Mike Akrawi started for the Predators and struggled, only completing 6 of 16 passes for 49 yards and two interceptions.
"We haven't had a quarterback since Day One," Forti said. "That's been our biggest issue. (Akrawi) only had a few days of practice and you need more than that to get in sync with the receivers."
Gay finished the game with 12 carries for 96 yards and three touchdowns for the Predators.
Cincinnati dominated nearly every aspect of the game. They had 15 first downs to Port Huron's seven.
They had 126 yards on the ground and 96 yards through the air.
Port Huron averaged fewer than three yards per offensive play.
"They just wanted it more than we did," said Predators defensive back and captain Ernie Smith, who missed the game with a calf injury.
"We have to finish and play offense and defense. They made more plays than we did."
The loss was the Predators second straight after starting the season 2-1. It also was the Predators third straight game they started a different quarterback.
The Predators will return home April 16 against the Marion Blue Racers. Port Huron previously lost to Marion, 44-37, on the road March 5.
"If they can't get up to play, it's on them," Forti said. "They need to be ready to go."
