CINCINNATI — Tyler Sheehan had four touchdown passes and another score on the ground to lead the Cincinnati Commandos to a 50-20 win Saturday over the Marion Blue Racers.
The win allowed the Commandos to complete an undefeated Continental Indoor Football League regular season at 10-0 and they will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Blue Racers could have taken the edge with a victory but could not sustain their offense and turned the ball over four times.
Marion ends the regular season at 8-2, with both losses coming to Cincinnati.
Marion scored on just one of four first-half possessions, despite getting into Cincinnati territory three times.
One drive was stopped by an interception by Commandos’ Corry Stewart at the Cincinnati 5 and a second drive stalled at the same place.
Marion was able to score late in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Josh Harris with 53 seconds left. Tyler Lorenz kicked the point after to close the gap to 16-7.
But Cincinnati, helped by a 35-yard kickoff return by Stewart, came right back with a four-yard touchdown run by Derrick Moss. The Commandos added the point after and took a 23-7 lead into the lockerroom.
Cincinnati scored twice in the first quarter, a 16-yard pass from Sheehan to Kyenes Mincy and a seven-yard strike from Sheehan to Phillip Barnett.
The Commandos made it 16-0 in the second quarter on a 28-yard field by Brandon Yingling.
A five-yard touchdown run by Harris closed the gap to 23-13 midway through the third quarter. A 14-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Marc Huddleston early in the fourth quarter once again had the Blue Racers within 10 points at 30-20.
But Cincinnati scored three times in the last seven minutes, including a 22-yard touchdown from Sheehan to Barnett on the last play of the game.
Sheehan completed 14 of 27 passes for 157 yards.
Harris was 10-of-18 passing but for only 64 yards and he was intercepted twice. The Commandos defense earned four sacks and Terrill Byrd scored on 15-yard fumble return.
Marion opens the two-week playoff season on June 6 as it hosts the Dayton Silverbacks while the Chicago Knights travel to Cincinnati on June 4.
