TRENTON - After being on the losing end of the highest scoring game in Southern Indoor Football League history a week ago, the Trenton Steel defense redeemed itself last night with a record performance of its own.
The Steel kept its fading playoff hopes alive by intercepting an SIFL record seven passes that contributed to an 83-23 win over the Harrisburg Stampede in front of a crowd of 3,139 at the Sun National Bank Arena Steel Mill.
Trenton’s third straight home win and sixth in its last seven games overall kept it one of only four teams in the Eastern Conference above .500. But that does not guarantee it will be one of the four to make the postseason.
The Steel play the final home game of their inaugural season next Thursday against Northeast Division leader Erie, the team they’ve lost two twice in three meetings this season and the one that rolled to a 90-79 win last weekend when Adam DiMichele threw for 12 touchdowns and 393 yards.
Last night Stampede quarterback Brian Harris felt the wrath of Trenton’s fired-up defense, which picked off seven of his passes to set an SIFL record for most INTs by one quarerback.
A omen of what type game this would become came on the opening play when Trenton’s Charles Graves cut in front of a Harrisburg receiver to "steel" a Harris pass and return it 28 yards down the sideline to give Trenton a lead in would never relinquish.
“When Graves picked that one off and ran it back for a touchdown I knew it was setting the tempo for the kind of game we were going to play,” said defensive back Gladell Brutus, the indoor rookie out of Neptune High who became the third Trenton player this season to set an SIFL record with three picks.
“We didn’t have a pass rush last week (6 players were missing) and when you don’t have a pass rush they can sit back there with plenty of time,” Steel coach Rod Miller said. “When you've got a pass rush you can make their quarterback uncomfortable.
“The biggest difference these past two games was our pass rush. When you’ve got the rush going it makes your job a lot easier,” said Miller.
“That first interception we get set the tone for all of us,” said Brutus. “Coach Miller went back to the drawing board after that terrible performance last week. We went over the fundamentals and the technique and came in knowing we had to play tighter on their receivers and not give them time to get open on their patterns.“
Newly-acquired DB Des Maul had two INTS, while Carl Spellman had the other as Trenton’s defense limited Harris to 126 passing yards on 13-of-34 completions.
Nemeth was 18-for-36 for 219 yards and also ran for four scores for the second game in a row. Oderick Turner, who set a league record with 13 catches in the Erie game, caught five last night for 86 yards and a TD, while Damon Harrison was 7-for-69 with a touchdown.
Wideout Antoine Rivera slammed hard into the end zone wall and suffered an apparent neck injury in the second half, although the extent of the injury had not been determined after the game.
