Titans hire Moore-Brown as head coach
18 November 2011
CEDAR RAPIDS — Kyle Moore-Brown is an indoor football lifer. Yes, there really is such a thing.
Following a two-year stint with the NFL’s Detroit Lions, Moore-Brown played 15 seasons as a center in the Arena Football League, starting 236 consecutive games.
“I saw the passion that the players had,” Moore-Brown said Friday afternoon after being formally introduced as the first head coach of the Cedar Rapids Titans. “It just kind of went from there. A lot of times a lot of people come to you and say this is semi-pro and all that. But these guys are professional football players. You get paid to do something, you’re a professional.”
Moore-Brown, 40, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the La Crosse Spartans of the Indoor Football League, taking over as head coach last midseason for his brother, former Packers defensive lineman Gilbert Brown.
That experience made him an easy choice for General Manager/Co-Owner Chris Kokalis to lead the Titans.
“All along, I kind of had my eyes set on one individual,” Kokalis said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with Kyle for the past couple of years, have gotten to know him as a friend and in a professional relationship … You’re talking about an individual who has tremendous character. One of the best coaches I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with.”
The Titans also announced the addition of Tommie Williams as offensive coordinator and Mitch Madland as defensive coordinator. Both have indoor football experience, Williams as a head coach. Former Winfield-Mount Union head coach Jeff Wrede and former Linn-Mar prep Eric George also are on the coaching staff.
The Titans are conducting open player tryouts this weekend in St. Louis and in January in Cedar Rapids. The team will conduct training camp in mid-February, then will pare its roster from 40 to 25.
A preseason game against the Omaha Beef will be Feb. 23 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, with the regular-season opener March 3 at the Ice Arena against the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks.
Kokalis said the team has sold 500 season tickets to date.
