Abbotsford doesn't own new Angels lingerie football team, says city
By Rochelle Baker, Abbotsford Times February 23, 2012
The Lingerie Football League team at AESC has a new name and logo. The LFL is simply an event at the AESC and Abbotsford in no way owns the franchise, say city officials.
The Lingerie Football League has named its Abbotsford-based team the B.C. Angels.
The Angels team, which will play two games this season at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, is part of the controversial LFL, which features pretty female players wearing bras, panties and garter belts as uniforms.
Critics worry the city signed a deal with the LFL similar to one signed with the AHL Heat hockey team.
City manager Frank Pizzuto said the city doesn't own the franchise, and there is no financial risk to the city or the AESC.
AESC operator Global Spectrum manages other facilities that host LFL in the States and the events were financially positive, he said.
The LFL will pay AESC $9,000 a game to cover house expenses, plus all production costs, AESC's general manager Jason Blumenfeld explained in an e-mail.
The league gets 30 percent of food and beverage sales and a 50 per cent split of AESC suite sale revenues, according to Blumenfeld.
The AESC also gets a $2.75 facility fee per paid ticket.
The LFL plans to announce tryouts for the BC Angels in the near future.
"Minor league pro football is a weird universe filled with bounced checks, unpaid bills, empty promises, out-right lies, empty arenas, endless women, endless booze, occasionally drugs, endless trips on rented buses to towns on the outskirts of the Big Time and, for one night a week, a football game." -- Bill Shea
