Despite last week’s loss to Mid-Missouri, the Kansas Koyotes still control their own fate in the APFL playoff hunt.
However, the Koyotes may need a win against the Council Bluffs Express at 7:05 p.m Saturday in Landon Arena to stay in the driver’s seat.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Koyotes are one of three teams battling for the last two playoff spots. The Koyotes, Mid-Missouri and Council Bluffs all come into this weekend with 6-3 records. Kansas has the tie-breaker with Mid-Missouri and would have the tie-breaker against Council Bluffs with a win Saturday.
“We still control our own destiny in these last three games,” Koyotes coach Tory Biladeau said. “This game is very important because we’re both 6-3. If we can beat Council Bluffs, we’ll be in pretty good shape as far as the playoff picture goes.”
The Koyotes nearly pulled off a huge comeback last week against Mid-Missouri, after trailing by 20 in the second half. In the end, Kansas couldn’t overcome a 19-0 halftime deficit and ultimately fell 33-28.
“Sometimes (a slow start) just happens, you don’t know why,” Biladeau said. “We fought hard in the second half, but we couldn’t afford to get in that big of a hole starting out.”
Biladeau said the Koyotes will try to build off a solid second-half showing offensively.
“We started moving the ball pretty well and mixed it up,” he said. “We’ve also added a couple things. In practice (Thursday), we did a lot of things through the air just to get our timing down with receivers and quarterbacks. I think they’re getting confident, so I think we’ll be all right.
Larry Albert has been the Koyotes’ main source of offense. Albert rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns against Mid-Missouri.
The Express, formerly known as the Iowa Blackhawks, are coming off a 41-29 loss to defending champion Sioux City.
“They were actually leading Sioux City in the fourth quarter last game,” Biladeau said. “They’re a good team. They’ve historically been a good team in this league. It’s always been a pretty good rivalry between the two teams.”
After facing the Express, the Koyotes will travel to Sioux City before hosting Springfield to conclude the regular season.
