Bandits cancel trip to Cheyenne

SIOUX CITY | The American Professional Football League appears to have lost two franchises -- meaning the Sioux City Bandits have two holes in their schedule.
The Bandits canceled this weekend’s game against the Cheyenne Warriors, along with a June 16 matchup against the now-defunct Colorado Lightning, which folded this week.
Cheyenne backed out of this weekend’s game to play a team from a different league, according to Bandits managing partner Bob Scott.
“They called us last week and said they weren’t going to play us, so I canceled our buses,” Scott said. “Then they called a couple of days ago wondering if we were coming and I told them we weren’t. I’m not sure what’s going on out there, but we’re not making the trip this weekend.”
Cheyenne, a league newcomer, will instead play the Denver Titans of the “APFL2” instead. In fact, the Warriors plan on finishing their season with against APFL2 teams, according to a release on the APFL’s website.
This news comes on the heels of word that the Colorado Lightning have also folded, meaning Sioux City has only two remaining games on its schedule -- June 8 at Council Bluffs and June 23 at home against the Kansas City Koyotes.
“Obviously this is a big concern because we’re not used to not playing our games,” Scott said. “We will finish the season and see what our options are after that.”
Cheyenne and Colorado joined the league this year, along with the Oklahoma Defenders. The loss of two franchises would reduce the already-fragile APFL to six teams, although the defections could just be beginning.
This weekend’s game between the Council Bluffs Express and Springfield WolfPack has also been canceled. The Express will play the Mills County Militia instead.
Two weeks ago, Springfield postponed its game against the Kansas Koyotes and earlier this season, they had to use last-minute replacements after showing up to play Sioux City without enough players to field a roster.
Cheyenne was winless before destroying the APFL2’s Northern Colorado Wolfpack 73-7 on Saturday -- but the Warriors forfeited a game against Mid-Missouri so they could face the Wolfpack instead.
Sioux City, which finished 14-0 last season en route to the league championship, ran its record to 8-0 and its win streak to 22 with a 49-16 victory over the Council Bluffs Express on Saturday in front of 4,312 at the Tyson Events Center. Council Bluffs (5-2) had won five straight.
Bandits assistant general manager Mark Carley said the APFL is to issue a press release today regarding the future of the league.
