SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - From slow starts to last minute victories, even with an 11-0 record, the 2012 campaign hasn't come without its share of ups and downs for the Sioux City Bandits.
"It's been a good challenge for us," said Bandits defensive back Rahn Franklin, Jr. "To build from adversity because we haven't had too much in the past couple of years and everything. You don't want everything to be a cake walk."
But the most difficult stretch of the season has come within the last month. The Cheyenne Warriors forfeited their remaining schedule and the Colorado Lightning folded as an organization, leaving the Bandits with two added bye weeks with just four weeks left to play.
"We have a game, a bye, a game, a bye, you try to get in sync and then you get a bye and then you're off sync and then build up a little rust," said quarterback Scott Jensen.
Sioux City also looks at the bye weeks as a blessing.
"Those weeks are invaluable," said Franklin. "You have people who are busted up a little bit. Even myself, there's a few bumps and bruises that get to recover with that off week."
Remaining focused heading into Saturday night's finale against Kansas is a major point of emphasis for the Bandits, especially since it'll be their first matchup with the Koyotes this year.
"You look at some of the NFL teams that'll go 14-0 and 15-0 and they get to that last week and pull all of their starters and they develop that rust and a lot of those teams don't go onto win the Super Bowl," said Bandits head coach Erv Strohbeen. "We're going to lay the pedal to the metal and keep going hard and strong these last few weeks."
The Bandits and Koyotes kick off at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Tyson Events Center.
