While It was a rough weekend for the Mid-Missouri Outlaws, who lost 75-10 to the Oklahoma Defenders on Saturday at the Mathewson Exhibition Center, they also received one bit of good news: Their franchise quarterback is healthy.
Not even four weeks removed from a broken collarbone suffered May 20 in the Outlaws’ 39-32 loss at Council Bluffs, Kyle Middleton was given the OK to resume football activities on Friday by team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ryan K. Edwards. (I don't know man, that seems like a pretty fast return for that type of injury, I hope it works out for him - BC)
“The last couple of weeks I’ve been feeling good and ... on Friday we took some X-rays which turned out well and the doctor medically cleared me to play,” said Middleton, who had started under center in every one of Mid-Missouri’s regular-season games since the team started in 2007 before Jeremy Spears took over the past three games. “Obviously there’s risk involved in playing football and breaking it again, and that’s why I sat against Oklahoma on Saturday.”
Middleton did suit up on Saturday in what he called a “dress rehearsal,” which entailed throwing a few routes to his receivers before the game.
“There was absolutely no pain,” Middleton said. “But that was without the tackling, of course. Going in, (Outlaws coach) Ben (Lyles) and I had talked Saturday about how I was just an emergency option. After it got out of hand early, there was no point for me to enter. We just had to be smart about it.”
The injury was originally supposed to keep Middleton out seven to eight weeks, but the quarterback stuck to doctor’s orders and was patient while his shoulder healed in a brace.
“I tried to do everything they told me to,” he said. I’ve had injuries before where I haven’t followed doctor’s orders and the healing process was slow. With the brace this time, it was really painful but I just trusted that I’d get healthy soon.”
Middleton will be in full participation mode this in practice this week and expects to take at least a few snaps in Saturday’s non-league home contest against the St. Louis Stars.
“Without a doubt it will be awesome to get him back this week, at least for a few plays, and ready for next week. He just needs to get the timing down,” Lyles said.
Added Middleton: “I’m looking forward to the live action. I might get one series or it might be one half. But Ben and I talked about how the most important game is June 30 and that’s what we’re prepping for.”
And after the severity of last week’s loss, he can’t wait to travel to Tulsa for the June 30 rematch against the Defenders.
“I’m ready to regroup and rally the troops,” he said. “It feels like I’ve been away from my family for a long time and I can’t wait to take the field in Oklahoma.”
