Bandits escape Express on late interceptions

COUNCIL BLUFFS | The Sioux City Bandits are still unscathed, thanks to their big-play defense.
Marlon Lobban and Rahn Franklin returned fourth-quarter interceptions for touchdowns in the game’s waning moments, and the Sioux City Bandits escaped Council Bluffs with a 41-29 victory on Friday night.
The defending champion Bandits (10-0) have won all 24 games since joining the APFL last season, but their streak was in serious jeopardy against their rivals 96 miles down Interstate 29.
Council Bluffs (6-3) grabbed a 29-28 lead midway through the fourth quarter on a pair of short Chris Marmet touchdown tosses to Robert Kirvin and Khalid Waters.
The Express halted the Bandits’ next drive and Nick Hope’s field-goal attempt fell short, giving Council Bluffs possession with just over five minutes left.
The Express milked the clock down to 2:13 before a hurried Marmet tossed a duck right into the hands of the linebacker Lobban -- who returned 39 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Bandit Jason Bonwell supplied the pressure.
Marmet tried to muster a last-minute drive, but threw another pick to Franklin -- who cushioned the Bandits’ lead with his second interception of the game and ninth of the season.
Marmet, the fourth quarterback Council Bluffs has used this season, threw just six incompletions -- but three of them were interceptions. He finished 18-for-24 for 148 yards.
Sioux City’s Scott Jensen, the reigning APFL MVP, tossed three scores with zero picks. For the season, he has 31 touchdown passes and just three interceptions.
Council Bluffs got a boost from former Bandit Kaylon Price, who carried 13 times for 56 yards and a pair of one-yard scores -- the second of which gave the Express a 13-7 first-quarter lead.
The Bandits answered quickly. Jensen fired a 30-yard score to Damon Mothershead and a three-yard touchdown to Damon Mothershead, set up by a long Franklin interception return.
Bruno put Sioux City on the board with a 20-yard double-reverse on a fourth-and-5 play.
Jensen connected with Eddie Pertilla on a 40-yard score on the opening play of the second half, stretching the Bandits’ lead to 28-16 before Council Bluffs caught up again.
The Express are still fighting with Oklahoma (7-2), Kansas (6-2) and Mid-Missouri (5-3) for the final three postseason spots.
Sioux City is guaranteed the other one, along with home-field advantage the entire way through.
