OMAHA (kptm) - Today was the first home game for the Omaha Beef and the team played on a new field, the Ralston Arena.
"I've been waiting for this day for a long time you know you got new owners, new league, just feels like a fresh feeling and a lot of excitement, seen a lot of old faces coming back and I'm really excited," fan Carl "Crazy Carl" Fleming says.
Crazy Carl wasn't the only one excited for the season opener. Hundreds of Omaha Beef fans watched as Ralston mayor Don Groesser cut the ribbon for the new field. "Great for the city, great for Omaha, Ralston. And just great for Omaha and I love the new house, the new slaughterhouse," Chuck "Mad Cow" Labudda says.
"I'm actually a 94' graduate at Ralston high school and I'm a resident in LaVista right now so it's a lot closer and just a good community right here," Fleming says.
"We're so excited to have everybody here, this is another great event for Ralston, it's just another stepping stone of where we're going to be and what this is going to become and this is just a great event," Mayor Groesser says.
Fans say it's a great place for the Omaha beef to play and many hope the new arena provides the team motivation to have a winning season. "They're a good team and we're ready to get back into it like we were last year. We want to see our team go all the way this year," fan Joel Kotrous says.
The new 3,500-seat venue is not only home to the Omaha Beef, it's also home to the Omaha Lancers and the UNO men's basketball team. "Well it's just fun to see all the new things coming online and you know I never dreamed we're going to have all this when we started but it's just a blessing to us all. We're having a good time," Mayor Groesser says.
Exciting new adventures for an independent town within a metropolitan city.
