WHICH GROUP OF BEAUTIES WILL BE BEASTS OF THE EAST?
We know one thing for sure about the Eastern Conference this season. We will not see a repeat. The defending champion Chicago Bliss has set up shop out west for the 2010 campaign, so that means new blood will take the title this time around. Some believe it’s a foregone conclusion, with most prognosticators selecting Tampa to capture the crown. Will it really be such a breeze for the Breeze? Miami made the postseason last season, while Tampa stayed home. Philadelphia had the same mark as the Breeze and defeated Tampa head-to-head. Two new clubs are in the mix as well, one in Maryland with some veteran talent on board and one in Disney World with absolutely nothing to lose. Who wins this thing is up for debate, but what it will take to claim the championship may be decipherable.
Everyone and their mother (except the moms of Passion, Charm, Fantasy, and Caliente players) is picking the Breeze to win the Eastern Conference, and why not? The pieces are certainly in place with a core group of returning stars, stability on the sidelines, and some new players to help put them over the top. So, will the Breeze muster gale force winds and demolish the competition?
Tampa could take the conference if they take the advice of Public Enemy and “don’t believe the hype.” Just because they are the media darlings of the off-season doesn’t translate into wins on Friday nights. The Breeze must keep their eyes on the prize and play as if they are underdogs. Top to bottom, they may very well be the most talented team, but games aren’t won on paper.
Tampa will win the east if- Their impressive rookie class looks as good in the regular season as they have in camp. Denisha Crawford shows the athleticism and leadership she dazzled us with for part of 2009 for all of 2010. Yo Murphy finds a way to spread the ball around to an entourage of stars including Tiffani Powers and Brandyce Lee. The defense dominates much like it did last season.
The Breeze will not win the east if- They take teams for granted and start to believe their headline clippings. Crawford can not lead effectively for a full year. The team doesn’t adapt to the new passing rules, requiring offenses to throw twice every four downs. Players wear down due to playing on both sides of the ball.
Miami has postseason experience. The Caliente burned their way into the postseason last year thanks to tiebreakers, after finishing 2-2 along with Tampa and Philadelphia. In the playoffs Miami was doused by Chicago to fall one win short of the world title game. That loss left a bad taste in the club’s collective mouth, and many of the players are back looking to take that extra step. So, is the Caliente ready to scorch their opponents?
There’s something to be said about leadership, and Miami’s got that covered in a big way. With names like Tina Caccavale, Taira Turley, and Anonka Dixon all back in the fold there is plenty of reason to believe South Beach will have a cause for celebration (as if they’ve ever needed a cause).
Miami will be Lingerie Bowl bound if- They can shore up a much maligned defense from a year ago. Turley can transition smoothly to her new role as running back. Dixon can handle throwing the ball more. Much ballyhooed rookie Etta Paul is the real deal.
The Caliente will be extinguished from Lingerie Bowl contention if- Caccavale, coming off of shoulder surgery, is not the force she was in 2009. The defense goes back to the Swiss cheese form it showcased from time to time last season. The blocking doesn’t improve. Any of the players bolt to join LeBron on the Heat.
Philadelphia finished .500 last season with a quarterback who specialized in handoffs and short passes. Enter Christie Bell. The rookie signal caller is bringing a new dimension to Chandler Brown’s gang. She’ll have plenty of targets to choose from and the hope is a new found aerial attack will lead to at least one more victory and a playoff berth. So, does Philly have more passion then the rest?
Bell will be a welcomed addition because Brown will be able to dial up a lot more on offense than just Lusby-left and Lusby-right. In fact, some other rookies could even free up the hard-running Tyrah Lusby for some receiver duty, thus keeping her fresher as the season progresses. The mix seems to be a good one with a crop of newcomers hoping to compliment All-Fantasy vets like Donna Ferry, Heather Perez, and Lauren LaBella.
The Passion will look like Rocky Balboa and head to Vegas if- Danielle Gassler and other rooks can bolster a defense that was as porous as SpongeBob at times in 2009. Bell can use her head as well as her arm and make not only strong throws, but accurate ones on a consistent basis. Former Majesty players Angela Perfetto, Tanyka Renee, and Ciara DaMuccio can turn their losing experience in New York into a desire to win. Players buy into the tactics of Brown, an extremely underrated coach.
Philadelphia will melt like the Wiz on a Geno’s cheese steak if- Roles are not defined and players aren’t sure about who is playing where. Nagging injuries like the ones suffered already by DaMuccio and Kim Wheat turn into more serious ailments. The large amount of newcomers don’t gel early enough in the season. They don’t win the turnover battle.
Orlando is brand new to the league yet the club is working on head coach number three. Doug Miller is seemingly here for the long haul, though, and he hopes his expansion Fantasy has what it takes to shock the LFL world. There is some raw talent on this roster. So, at the end of the day, is the key word “raw” or “talent”?
Strong armed quarterback Veronica Moor has wowed them at Fantasy practices, showing accuracy and distance with her throws. Having that all important piece of the puzzle ready to roll could bode well for the new team, especially since Miller intends to employ a wide open attack on offense.
Orlando will make fantasy a reality and crash the Lingerie Bowl if- Moor develops each and every game and has the receivers to haul in her passes. Miller provides a professional, mature atmosphere to a roster that’s already been burned twice by coaches. J. J. Thacker, Jenny Kraus, and others can handle playing offense and defense at a high level. Prayers are answered.
The Fantasy’s inaugural season will be a Mickey Mouse operation if- The damage is already done from the first two coaching debacles. Moor does not have any help. A leader on defense other than Tiffani Harden does not emerge. The other teams in the conference play up to their potential.
Baltimore is an expansion club as well, but the purple and gold aren’t quite as green as Orlando. Along with all the rookies on the squad, the Charm has quarterback Krystal Gray on board. The former Majesty player is joined on the Maryland mashers by Kiera Massette Somers, also a veteran of last year’s New York franchise.
Gray is not the only potential starting quarterback on the roster. Samantha Alan is also vying for time under center. Despite being an expansion team, Baltimore has lots of weapons, especially on offense. So, will the first time be the charm or is Baltimore in for a season of growing pains?
The Charm will pack their bags for Sin City if- Gray is named starting quarterback and remains starter for the full season. A slew of talented rookies like Carol King and Ida Bernstein can play as well with pads on as they have in shorts and sports bras. Their very talented defense can hold opponents to under 20 points week in and week out. They keep their heads up if the season gets off to a rocky start.
Baltimore will pack their crab cakes and head to the bowl as spectators if- The team is micro managed and over-coached. The quarterback controversy divides the locker room. The very talented defense is asked to do too much. They play like an expansion team.
So which of the five do you think has what it takes? It’s almost show time.
