Northern Kentucky high school legend Jared Lorenzen is back on the field following more than a year away from playing organized football. Lorenzen, a former Highlands High and University of Kentucky quarterback, has helped lead the Northern Kentucky River Monsters to a 3-1 record in the Ultimate Indoor Football League. Lorenzen, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound left-hander, is among the UIFL passing leaders in several categories. He threw seven touchdown passes Friday while leading the River Monsters to a 79-21 victory over Johnstown in their home debut at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
Lorenzen, Highlands' quarterbacks coach in 2010, previously appeared in uniform in 2009, suiting up for the Kentucky Horsemen of af2. His most recent stint on an NFL roster was during the 2008 preseason with the Indianapolis Colts. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the New York Giants in the 2007-08 season.
Lorenzen served as a volunteer consultant while the River Monsters put together their team. He's the face of the first-year franchise and its main draw in the six-team UIFL. The team said it attracted nearly 3,000 fans for Friday's home opener.
So what's it like for the Hefty Lefty to be going from the front office back to the field and firing footballs again at live receivers in the face of a pass rush? We caught up with Lorenzen to find out. Here is what he had to say:
"It's exciting to be playing again. It's really been a lot of fun to get out there and play football with the guys and do all the things that comes with it. We just have a blast. You make 30 new friends and they are your friends forever.
"I'm 30 years old. But you're as old as you act, so I'm probably 12. I'm just a big kid, but I'm sore when I'm done playing because I am 30. I just love the game. And I was out nearly two years, and it was tough not playing. I just can't get rid of it, and I got the itch.
"The arena game is so much different than the NFL but it's a lot of fun. We throw it a lot. I can still throw it, but I only have to throw it 50 yards now. We'll take our shots when we have the ball in this league. It's a throw it as many times as you can and keep scoring kind of game.
"I think the coolest thing about it is I get to play in front of my family and friends, really near where we all live. I think one of the best things about it is my kids are getting to see me play. They are 8 and 18 months.
My daughter was in day care when I was at UK and never saw a game. Now she has all her friends here so they can get into it. And we got pictures of me and the little guy for when he grows up. It's just been awesome."
