March 22, 2011
Martavious Young became the first player to rush for 100 yards in an UIFL game.
CANTON, OH – The Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) has announced the weekly players of the week, for the week ending March 21. (UIFL Weekly Report)
The Northern Kentucky River Monsters, fresh off a 79-21 victory over Johnstown in their home opener, had two players earn the league’s weekly honor. While for the first time in league history, two players are sharing an award.
With two scintillating offensive performances, Huntington’s Martavious Young and Canton’s Ryan Brinson share the Conquest Cards Offensive Player of the Week honor. It’s the first offensive award for both teams.
Young registered for five touchdowns, three passing and two rushing, and became the first UIFL player to record 100 yards rushing. In addition to the five touchdowns, Young accounted for 245 yards – 118 rushing and 127 passing.
Brinson, who was signed this week, became the first receiver to record 200 yards receiving. He finished with 10 catches for 204 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winner with 16 seconds left.
Northern Kentucky’s defensive line dominated the line of scrimmage all night with 10 sacks. Thomas McKenzie, who earned Terry’s Tire Town Defensive Player of the Week, recorded 4.5 of those sacks with seven tackles and a quarterback hurry. He is the second NKY player (Kenneth Joshen 2/28) to earn the league’s defensive honor.
For the third consecutive week, a player from Northern Kentucky earned the Edge Sportswear Special Teams Player of the Week. Kicker Dustin Zink became the league’s first-ever two-time honoree after going 11-for-11 on extra points with two UNO’s. In addition, he averaged 50 yards on his kickoffs.
