IFL's Week 5 Recap
The Indoor Football League’s fifth week of competition to the championship proved to be eventful as some teams maintained their dominance and others earned their first win for the season.
Week 5 for the Indoor Football League began with the Bricktown Brawlers visiting the Allen Wranglers on Friday evening. The two teams were evenly matched; however, the Bricktown Brawlers were plagued by fumbles and inceptions; the majority of the Brawlers’ fumbles and interceptions led to Wranglers’ points. Though the Brawlers fought a good game, they were not able to overcome the various fumbles and interceptions throughout the game, which led to a victory for the Allen Wranglers, 42-26.
The West Texas Roughnecks hosted the Amarillo Venom on Friday evening in hopes of coming back from a loss against the Bricktown Brawlers last week. The West Texas Roughnecks started off strong, scoring the only points of the first quarter. By half time the Amarillo Venom were only behind by 7 points. At the end of the game, the two teams had a total of 5 touchdowns; however, Amarillo could not prevail over the 1 fumble, 2 sacks, and 3 inceptions committed, and the West Texas Roughnecks came out victorious, 37-34.
The Kent Predators showed up at the Chicago Slaughter looking to get their second win of the season. Both teams closed out the first quarter with 6 points; however, the Predators dominated the Slaughter in the second quarter, outscoring them 18-9. By the time the second half started, both teams knew that they would have to play a well-fought game in order to be the victors. The Kent Predators played strong with a total of 283 offensive yards compared to Chicago’s 117 and with 2 more touchdowns than Chicago; however, it appeared that the kicking game of Chris Nendick, Chicago Slaughter, with 3 field goals, and 2 extra points compared to the 0 points from the kicking efforts of the Kent Predators allowed the Chicago Slaughter to come out on top with a score of 37-36.
Both the Tri-Cities Fever and Omaha Beef played a vigorous game of football on Friday evening in Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska. The Fever and the Beef scored double-digits in three of the four quarters of the game, and the greatest difference between the score was only 7 points. The total offense for each of the teams were well over 200 yards; however, Tri-Cities Fever had much better success with their rushing as a team, which resulted in 4 touchdowns versus the Beef’s 1 rushing touchdown. The success and power of the Tri-Cities Fever rush allowed them to defeat the Omaha Beef 51-37.
The Sioux Falls Storm travelled to the Wichita Wild on Saturday evening. Of course, both of the teams had one goal in sight and that was to win; however, for two very different reasons. The Sioux Falls Storm was looking to maintain their, thus-far, undefeated season, while the Wichita Wild was hoping to gain their first win of the season. Unfortunately for the Wichita Wild, the Sioux Falls Storm took an early lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Wild 23-7. From the first quarter through the fourth quarter the Storm scored a minimum of 20 points each quarter while the Wild could only muster 13 points in the fourth quarter, which was too late to come back from such a great deficit. Though the Wild had a rough game, they were able to have great success with their kickoff returns with a total of 139 yards to the Storm’s 59 yards. The Storm was able to remain undefeated with a score of 92-20.
The Fairbanks Grizzlies stopped by the Wenatchee Valley Venom on Saturday evening looking for another ‘w’. With goal in mind, the Grizzlies dominated the first quarter with a score of 13-0. However, the Venom was able to score 8 of their own points and hold the Grizzlies scoreless in the second quarter, both teams were tied with 13 in the third quarter, and both teams scored in the 20’s in the fourth quarter. It appeared that what made the difference in the game was the kicking of Rett Thibodeaux of the Grizzlies and Greg Erickson of the Venom. Erickson only made 1 extra point, while Thibodeaux made 5 extra points and a field goal. The effort of Thibodeaux helped the Fairbanks Grizzlies beat the Wenatchee Valley Venom, 50-43.
The Blizzard traveled to visit the Nebraska Danger on Sunday to try and record their third win of the season. The Blizzard would strike quick with a QB sneak to jump to a 6-0 lead. Sewell would strike two more times in the third quarter to give the Blizzard a 30-14 lead into the fourth quarter. The Danger would hold the Blizzard most of the fourth quarter to 37 points bringing the team back to a one point deficit at 37-36. Green Bay would stand tough for the win striking twice more with a return from B.J. Hill and a 53 yard field goal by Josh Shene completing the score at 48-38.
The Wyoming Cavalry would make the trip to Arizona at .500 on the season with a record of 1-1. Coming off of a big win over the veteran Amarillo Venom, the Cavalry would seek no mercy for their Adrenaline opponents. The Adrenaline’s offense continued to struggle against a tough Cavalry team only registering 8 points. Offense for the Cavalry on the other hand was no problem. The Cavalry offense would find its groove putting up 55 points on the Adrenaline defense, marking their best performance yet with a score of 55-8. The Adrenaline will make the trip to Cavalry country this weekend as they re-match in Wyoming.
The La Crosse Spartans would record their second win this weekend in Richmond , VA. The Spartans made the long trip to Virginia this weekend to take on the Revolution. The Revolution was ready to record another victory after their last second OT win over Steelhawks. Spartans came out fierce in the first half outscoring the opponent 27-0. The Revolution would not give up; a touchdown scored by newcomer Scorpio Brown would boost the team’s moral. The Revolution would score 33 points in the second half, but it was not enough to clinch the victory as a last second hail mary would be picked off to end the score 39-33 in favor of the Spartans.
