SIFL disbands; Columbus Lions help form PIFL
Oct. 06, 2011
From staff reports
The Columbus Lions announced Wednesday the formation of the Professional Indoor Football League after the Southern Indoor Football League disbanded.
The Lions are of charter members of the PIFL, along with SIFL rivals Albany Panthers, Alabama Hammers (Huntsville) and Louisiana Swashbucklers (Lake Charles).
Also joining the league are the Richmond Raiders and Knoxville Nighthawks.
Several teams from the SIFL’s Southwest Division broke off to form the Lone Star Football League in Texas, whose champion might play the PIFL winner, according to the Lions’ news release.
Lions managing partner John Hargrove said in the release that the formation of the PIFL “will provide opportunities for the Lions to work with very solid and experienced ownership groups in a geographically friendly neighborhood.”
Lions part owner Rick Jacobson, the vice president of sales and marketing, said the PIFL will reduce the team’s travel costs it had in the SIFL.
“This travel challenge plus the current challenges of our national economy brought six very solid teams and experienced ownership groups together,” Jacobson said in the release. “In addition to undergoing less travel, PIFL teams plan to share best business practices which have evolved from their years of experience.”
The Lions’ 2012 schedule features home games in the Columbus Civic Center on March 3 (preseason opponent TBA), March 17 (Knoxville), March 31 (Alabama), April 14 (Louisiana), May 5 (Albany), June 9 (Albany) and June 16 (Knoxville).
