HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- With their playoff fate secured and multiple key players resting as a result, the Saginaw Sting wrapped up their regular season with a 49-25 loss Sunday to the Huntington Hammer.
The Sting finished their first regular season in the Ultimate Indoor Football League with a 9-5 record.
"They played pretty well," Sting coach Vince Leveille said. "I think with the full team, it would have been a different story, but our goal is to get ready for playoffs."
Leveille said he didn't want to risk any injuries in a game that was meaningless in the standings for Saginaw.
"We didn't want to take any chances with anybody getting hurt," Leveille said.
The Sting had already secured the top overall playoff seed going into the game, thanks to league sanctions against 11-3 Northern Kentucky which moved them from the No. 1 seed to the No. 4 seed
The Sting will take on the No. River Monsters Friday, June 3, 7:30 p.m. at The Dow Event Center.
The winner will advance to Ultimate Bowl I, against the winner of Huntington -- who secured a playoff berth with Sunday's win -- and Eastern Kentucky. Should the Sting win their first game, they would host the Ultimate Bowl.
"Now we're ready for playoffs," Leveille said. "It's a whole new season."
Sting quarterback Tommy Jones was among the players who sat out Sunday's game. Yvens Louis, normally a wide reciever, played quarterback.
Leveille said Kevin Brown, Zac Nichols and LaVaughn Macon all caught touchdown passes.
The Sting trailed 22-16 at the half, before the Hammer 27 second-half points, while the Sting only managed nine.
"We struggled offensively," Leveille said.
