LFL Fantasy Football Preview: Philadelphia Passion at Tampa Breeze
Each week we’ll break down the upcoming football matchup from a fantasy perspective, highlighting the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers that are likely to put up the flashiest fantasy stats of the weekend.
This week: Philadelphia Passion (3-0) at Tampa Breeze (3-0)
QB: Christy Bell, Passion. Both teams have great quarterbacks, which isn’t surprising since they’re both undefeated. But in fantasy football it doesn’t really matter who’s better. All that matter is who puts up better stats, and Bell easily comes out on top. She has 181 yards passing with six touchdowns– that’s 100 more yards and twice the scores as Denisha Crawford. Bell has also yet to commit a turnover. Neither quarterback offers much running the ball, so it comes down to passing stats, and the Passion has utilized Bell a lot more than the Breeze has utilized Crawford. Go with Bell on the road.
RB1: Marirose Roach, Passion. You would think we’d recommend the league’s leading rusher who averages 10 yards per carry and has 11 combined touchdowns in three games…and we are. Roach also has five receptions for 36 yards in addition to her 321 on the ground, making her a threat regardless of what kind of play Philadelphia runs. She’s a big part of the offense and the best running back fantasy play in this game. The Breeze will obviously try to stop her, but nobody’s done it yet. There’s no reason to avoid a playmaker, even in a tough road contest. Roach is the top running back pick.
RB2: Tiffani Powers, Breeze. Roach isn’t the only good running back who will take the field on Thursday. Powers averages an impressive nine yards per carry and has six touchdowns to her credit. Unfortunately, she’s not used as a receiver, with just one catch in three games. But she’s one of the league’s top runners, and she should have plenty of opportunities against the Passion. Tampa would like to keep Philadelphia’s offense off the field, and a strong running game would help accomplish that goal. Expect Powers to get her fair share of carries in this game, which makes her a solid fantasy play this week at home.
WR1: Tyrah Lusby, Passion. Lusby is Philadelphia’s leading receiver with seven receptions, 75 yards and two touchdowns. But she’s also the team’s second-leading rusher with eight carries for 48 yards and another score. A reliable utility player in a high-powered offense, Lusby is a good fantasy play in what should be a close game. Plus, she’s as likely to get the ball on a running play as she is a passing play. Since teams have to run twice and throw twice every four downs, players who excel at both hold extra value. Lusby is one of those players.
WR2: Saige Steinmetz, Breeze. Tampa doesn’t really have a standout receiver (they don’t throw the ball enough to accumulate gaudy stats) but we’ll go with Steinmetz based on her play-making ability and big game against Miami. The Breeze only completed four passes all game but Steinmetz did her damage on the ground, racking up 70 yards and two scores on just two carries. On the year she also has a couple of receptions and another touchdown. Since she was such a factor in the last game, it makes sense that the team will try to put the ball in her hands again. She’s a sleeper pick but could be responsible for some big plays in the game.
Defense: Breeze. If we like Philadelphia’s quarterback, running back and wide receiver, why choose Tampa’s defense? Admittedly, it’s almost a toss-up. Philadelphia is a better defense from a yards-per-game standpoint, and they’re better against the pass. Tampa is better against the run and has given up fewer touchdowns. They’re at home, too.
But there’s one statistic that sways the argument in the Breeze’s favor: Turnovers. Philadelphia is a pedestrian +1 while Tampa is a league-leading +9. Turnovers can stop a potential scoring drive, keep a potent offense off the field, frustrate a team and cause them to change their game plan. You can’t win if you can’t keep the ball, and Tampa is the best at taking it away more than they give it up. Bell’s no-turnover streak will clash with this aggressive defense, and in an important game at home we’ll go with Tampa in a close call.
