WEEK 13 PREVIEW | PHILADELPHIA PASSION AT BALTIMORE CHARM
By: Jim Wallin (LFL360.com)
Philadelphia’s offensive weaponry is amassing on the horizon as the Mid-Atlantic border war is set to commence this Friday night, with the supercharged Passion (2-0) and sizzling Charm (2-1) prepare to engage each other at Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena in what promises to be a 34-minute fight — not only for bragging rights, but for the home team, survival.
PHILADELPHIA PASSION
The Philadelphia Passion, who fell just short of ultimately glory in Lingerie Bowl VIII, are back on the championship quest again, this time riding high after demolishing Cleveland 60-18, behind a 34-point second-half avalanche that ultimately buried the Crush.
Led by reigning Offensive Player of the Year, running back Marirose Roach, an emerging star in 2011 All-Fantasy Co-MVP Christy Bell and improved performance of wide veteran wide receiver Tyrah Lusby, Head Coach Chandler Brown’s multiple set offensive system has proven to be unstoppable so far this season. leading the league with a 54 points-per-game average. While Roach may receive much of the attention, her backup, Jenny Butler, is a powerful runner that provides the Passion with several choices of how to best attack opposing defenses.
Defensively, Philadelphia likes to employ zone coverage, anchored by linebacker Heather Roy and All-Fantasy selection cornerback Jaleesa McCrary as well as the utilization of the dangerous Roach at safety. At least so far, the well-balanced Passion have the look of a team who may finally deliver a world championship to their long-suffering football fans.
BALTIMORE CHARM
Head Coach Rick Reeder and his third-place Baltimore Charm bring a two-game winning streak into the action, demolishing Toronto 42-6 on the heels of a dramatic, season-saving 20-19 win at Cleveland. But now, a win against undefeated Philadelphia would go a long way to seriously challenging the Eastern Conference powers for a ticket to the second season.
The Charm offense consists of methodical approach designed to systematically move the chains while wearing down the opposing defense. Baltimore runs an above average amount of misdirection plays, which Coach Reeder employs to try to combat overly aggressive defenses. Even so, the opposition should not sleep on the talents of starting quarterback Stacy Moon, star running back and MVP candidate Kyle DeHaven and 2011 All-Fantasy selection and free agent signee, tight-end Ashley Helmstetter , who provide the offense with competitive firepower, especially in the short-to-medium range passing game as well as a complementary change-of-pace running back.
The Charm employ a zone defense, designed to contain even the most talented offensive teams and aggressive playbooks. Baltimore’s secondary is especially strong, with cornerback Kelly Campbell and safety Opal Jones making it difficult for offenses to consistently succeed on deep passing routes. Up front, the Charm has struggled against the run this season, however possesses a strong read-and-react leader in DeHaven, who can freelance when allowed and has multiple interceptions this season. In fact, DeHaven collected two interceptions against All-Fantasy quarterback Anonka Dixon in the opening week and strong subsequent performances against the talented Cleveland Crush and hungry Toronto Triumph.
