SATURDAY NIGHT PREVIEW | CHICAGO BLISS AT MINNESOTA VALKYRIE
By: Jim Wallin (LFL360.com)
The 2010 Western Conference runner-ups Chicago Bliss (0-2) hope to regain respectability while the Minnesota Valkyrie (1-1) seek a huge win to gain prime playoff position as the two meet for the first time ever on Saturday night at Minneapolis’ Target Center. The Bliss, fresh off of two consecutive home defeats, must win this game to keep faint playoff hopes alive while the Valkyrie are almost equally desperate for a home win to improve their second-season prospects.
CHICAGO BLISS
The Chicago Bliss enter the action facing more questions than answers about not only their defense, after surrendering 68 points in two home games against the expansion Sin and Chill, but their offense as well due to an extremely ineffective passing attack, combined with depth concerns and inexperience. The Bliss are one-dimensional on offense, but are led by a very talented rookie RB ChrisDell ‘Ferrari’ Harris, who slices through defenses with ease and potentially can turn into a superstar if she can work on her ball possession skills and Chicago can develop a more balanced attack.
Chicago will rely on 2010-11 LFL MVP Heather Furr to quarterback their offense and talented rookie wide receiver Laura Petersen to mount a challenge to the Valkyrie defense. On defense, veteran Yahshi Rice, the sister of former NFL Pro Bowler Simeon Rice, will attempt to control the Valkyrie offense on the ground while Petersen, Furr and the Chicago secondary are tasked with limiting big-play opportunities for the dangerous Whitney Meierotto.
MINNESOTA VALKYRIE
Valkyrie Head Coach Tony Nguyen is widely expected to heavily utilize his self-described ‘College Bend’ offense, relying on the multidimensional talents of RB Katrina Stewart , mobility of QB Jocelyn Bendijo and the size, speed and agility of WR Whitney Meierotto to revive a struggling offense (17.5 ppg.). Minnesota is expected to implement a wide variety of looks in an attempt to confuse the weak Chicago defense as they did in their lone win of the season against Green Bay.
On defense, Minnesota is expected to run a blend of ‘Cover 1′ and ‘Cover 2′ schemes, emphasizing containment over blitz-heavy packages. Look for the cornerbacks, namely the aforementioned Meierotto and Angie Hanson, to play key roles in limiting the effectiveness of the Temptation’s offensive weaponry Minnesota’s defensive line features the strength and speed of DE Leekplay Paye and DE Brittany Austin, who are equally charged with containing ChrisDell Harris, Heather Furr and the supercharged Chicago running game.
