David meets Goliath this week as the No. 12 Toronto Triumph (0-2) challenge the No. 1 Philadelphia Passion (3-0), who are seeking their eighth consecutive regular season inter-conference win. Both teams enter the action from polar opposite ends of the spectrum. On one hand, Toronto has been synonymous with inconsistent play while Philadelphia possesses the veteran leadership, depth and track record that suggests the road team may be indeed facing a giant in this match-up.
TORONTO TRIUMPH
No team has endured as much turnover as Toronto has experienced in their young history, but one thing is clear: The Triumph are a hard-working team that embodies their coaching staff, namely Co-Head Coaches Don Marchione and Mary Kennedy. Led by the gutsy QB Donna Paul, RB Katrina Trabulsey as well as TE Davine Burton, the blue-collar Triumph offense may not always make things look pretty, but are perfectly content that playing gritty will ultimately lead to sustained success. Paul is an aggressive quarterback who isn’t afraid to scramble and attempt to reach the first down marker if no other pass receiving options exist. She is the unquestioned leader of this team and fits well so far into Marchione’s wide-open, free-wheeling offensive system. The tempo-driven playbook is designed to force the opposing defense to read-and-react in a shorter time-frame and, when executed to perfection, spreads the field and opens up running lanes to develop a strong ground game, ideally forcing the defense to focus on stopping one aspect and merely trying to contain the other.
The Triumph defense is expected to display a physical presence that centers on stopping the run by implementing multiple looks, with a blend of zone and man-to-man schemes. Though the Triumph defense has so-far been unable to stop high-caliber running attacks, like Saige Steinmetz of Tampa or Kyle DeHaven of Baltimore, Marchione is confident that his team can learn the system quickly enough to make a positive impact in this game.
PHILADELPHIA PASSION
The Philadelphia Passion enter the action hoping to emerge with a fourth consecutive win, capping off a perfect regular season and providing the team with a tidal wave of momentum heading into the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Led by reigning Offensive Player of the Year and 2011-12 MVP candidate RB Marirose Roach, an emerging star in 2011 All-Fantasy Co-MVP Christy Bell as well as improved performance of wide veteran wide receiver Tyrah Lusby, Head Coach Chandler Brown’s multiple set offensive system has proven to be unstoppable so far this season, leading the league with a 44-points-per-game average. While Roach may receive much of the attention, her backup, Jenny Butler, is a powerful runner that provides the Passion with several choices of how to best attack opposing defenses.
Defensively, Philadelphia’s swarming defense likes to employ zone coverages, anchored by linebacker Heather Roy and All-Fantasy cornerback Jaleesa McCrary as well as the utilization of the opportunistic Roach at safety. With only one game now remaining, the Passion have the look of a team who may finally deliver a world championship to their long-suffering football fans.
Stadium: Sun National Bank Center (Trenton, NJ–Artificial Turf, Indoors)
Kickoff: 9:00 p.m. ET

TORONTO: DONNA PAUL (QB) | KATRINA TRABULSEY (RB) | DAVINE BURTON (TE)
PHILADEPHIA: MARIROSE ROACH (RB/S) | CHRISTY BELL (QB) | TYRAH LUSBY (WR) | JALEESA MCCRARY (CB) | JENNY BUTLER (S/RB)
