Blackhawks to be tested by unbeaten Outlaws
By Ace Hendricks, Blackhawks staff writer
June 3, 2009 - The Iowa Blackhawks, undefeated and leading the American Professional Football League (APFL) standings by two games, welcome the Mid-Missouri Outlaws to the Mid-America Center Saturday in what could be a very intriguing battle for both teams.
The Outlaws, members of the Central Plains Football League (CPFL), a semi-pro outdoor football league that plays by indoor rules, have won three consecutive CPFL championships and are fresh from a 10-0 record this season that saw a 62-35 pasting of the Independence Bulldogs in the championship game last Saturday.
They outscored its opponents this season 454-199, and despite its gaudy scoring numbers, were actually led by a extremely proficient defense, that consistently choked off opponents offenses with speed and quickness.
Defensively, they are led by linebacker Tufue Tua (5'10", 235); strong safety Travis Jobe (5'9", 220) and nose guard Dennis Gerken (6', 220). In the secondary they have Chad Jackson (5'11", 205) who led the Outlaws in interceptions.
On offense, Kyle Middleton threw eight touchdowns in the championship game, with receivers Ben Lyles (3 TDs), Aaron Luebbe (2 TDs) and Marcus James (2 TDs) taking in a majority of MIddleton's passes; James also added a rushing touchdown.
The Blackhawks, idle last week, are off to a 5-0 record, and in the driver’s seat in the APFL. They last defeated Kansas, 55-35, in Topeka nearly two weeks ago, and look to keep its undefeated streak intact.
Mell Holliday rushed for 95 yards in 22 carries against the Koyotes, and has gained 348 yards on the ground, scoring 14 touchdowns. Chuck Wright has completed 67% of his passes for 641 yards and nine touchdowns with rookie wide receiver Marques McCray catching 14 of those passes for 303 yards and six scores in the last two games. Steve Rush has also caught 14 passes (161 yards) with three scores.
The offensive line of Tyrice Ellebb, Greg Ernster, Cameron Gales and Willie Bradley has been impressive lately, and could play a major role in the Blackhawks offensive showing Saturday night. All weigh over 300 pounds and could wear down the smaller Outlaws defensive line.
The defense is led by local products Chris Moore and Jeff McQuinn, the latter having produced big plays all season. Moore had a game-sealing interception against Kansas in Council Bluffs, and provides big hits and leadership on the field. Jerry Lakin, has converted 27 consecutive extra points, and is 34 for 36 on the season.
